Microsoft Research has developed a prototype of a microkernel operating system,
code-named 'Singularity.' Its most surprising feature: It has nothing to do with Windows.
I quote: "What would a software platform look like if it was designed from scratch with the primary goal of dependability?"
"Singularity is not Windows. Every line of code was written from scratch," said Galen Hunt, a senior researcher with Microsoft Research who is helping to spearhead the Singularity project.
Microsoft have basically got a project going on here to wipe 'Windows' off the map and replace it with something that is new from a new code base and everything. It won't be NT based or any of that, a complete new start which is AMAZING!
How far are MS with this HUGE TASK?
Again i quote: "We have developed a working kernel, as originally conceived," said Hunt. "Now we can build a lot of components on top of it."
The whole thing is going to be written with tighter and with DIFFERENT code, the things that make windows WEAK will be moved out.
This is like being told we are going to have to live on mars or something, i only hope this does happen and that it doesn't merge with co-existing or future projects and become Windows and that they really get this up off the ground. I don't doubt useful features of Windows would make it in but they would be re-written again with increased stability.
I would appreciate your opinions on this
