images/news/ie.jpgMicrosoft has announced that it will ship a special version of Vista's successor in Europe, titled Windows 7 E, without Internet Explorer 8. The browser-less version, a reaction to an antitrust investigation by the EU into whether Microsoft is abusing its dominant position with Windows and Internet Explorer, will be distributed in all member nations of the European Economic Area as well as Croatia and Switzerland.

As first reported by CNET and confirmed by Microsoft, OEMs will have the option to add the browser back in, ship another browser, or ship multiple browsers. "The E versions of Windows 7 will include all the features and functionality of Windows 7 in the rest of the world, other than browsing with Internet Explorer," Microsoft notes. "Computer manufacturers will be able to add any browser they want to their Windows 7 machines, including Internet Explorer, so European consumers who purchase new PCs will be able to access the Internet without any problem. Consumers will also be able to add any Web browser to their PCs, to supplement or replace the browsers preinstalled by their computer manufacturer."

Im not quite understanding this whole thing. Isn't this Microsoft's OS? Cant they put what they want in it? Why not remove notepad or paint or disk defrag? I dont see the EU fining Apple for bundling Safari into its OSx.

Whiny bunch of babies.

Seems like it's sorta a waste.
Don't they know how to download a browser?

I would think that this version(without IE) would have to be able to allow updates with other browsers- so it might be something worth having !

Exactly Roady. its not all that hard. The first thing i do when i do a clean install is download FF to run along side of IE.

But the point is why does MS get the flack when other OS's dont?

oh, and also, why did google come out with Chrome for Windows and let Linux and Apple lag behind?

Actually, the EU requested a version of Windows with a selection of browsers, in stead of just IE, to give the user the "choice"

Now, MS has done exactly the opposite, giving a Windows without any browser at all. Therofor disabling the EU user to even GET A BROWSER!

Only option to get a browser is to use Microsoft Update to download... tadatataaaaa!
Yes, IE8 :bluerip:

You need a browser to download another browser... jajaja..

Still i do not see the big fuzz about it. You always need IE anyways.... I mean... Technet and a few other COMPATIBILITIES...

I tried safari... and its the only one that completes the acid3 test... WOW... but you know..web pages are SO freaking slow with it...

I mainly use FF with the IEtab on it...
