images/news/firefox.jpg64-bit Firefox is now operational under 64-bit Windows and is being continuously worked on. The current version is called Minefield; we are looking forward to later versions.

Win64 build doesn't work on 32bit Windows even if you use processor that supports Intel EM64T or AMD64. If you want to use this, you have to install Windows x64 version (Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition or Windows Vista x64).

So?, who's walking though the mine field? Has it blow up, or is it a nice walk?

I tried it awhile back and didn't have many issues with it other than the lack of add-ons and what not. Banjer I believe was not a fan of it tho.

This was quite a bit ago. Did they finally release the non-beta version then?

OK, I installed Minefield on my Server '08 x64 to see what it was like. I have made it the default browser and will run it around the block. I have tried FF in the past and was never overly impressed but am always willing to try to see if there is something better than IE7... :roadrunner:

The initial thoughts are good. The browser is quick and relatively smooth. It does have some odd behaviors concerning downloads and cache clearing to mention two. Adobe Flash Player has no plugin for the 64 bit browser so you constantly have to deal with the request to d/l and install. You also miss the flash presentations as well. I have tried to assign default behavior to files such as .jpg, .ofx, and .wmv to automatically open with certain programs yet they do not. You are always prompted as to what you wish to do with the file. I have checked the settings and they are as I have set them but the behavior does not follow the settings. If the comparison is made (IE7 or Minefield) on an apple to apple basis then there is little advantage to one over the other. If the Flash Player were available then I would probably stay with Minefield but as it is I will return to IE7 to avoid the anomalies mentioned above.

If any of you have had different results or know of the plug in, let me know and I perhaps will try again...Bill. :christo: :chriso:
