images/news/windows.jpgAnxious to put an end to those annoying Apple ads and the negative perception around Vista, Microsoft's new OS may come a lot sooner than it has said.

Publicly, Microsoft has said Windows 7, the successor operating system to the firm's much maligned Windows Vista, will not ship until early 2010, but its internal calendar has June 3, 2009 as the planned release date, InternetNews.com has learned.

Also, Microsoft will use its Professional Developer's Conference in late October as the launch platform for the first public beta of Windows 7. Microsoft plans to release the first beta on October 27, the first day of the show, when Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie will be the keynote speaker.

a lot of work went into vista and its not until it gets out to all the different scenarios that you can't perfect it. I am sure that in their platform PCs, vista ran very fine.. and in most of the old pc's they could gather, vista ran fine also.

XP didn't became the XP we know today the first year... It took 2 years and SP2 to really be the OS it is. We have SP1 and we finally have a stable and fine OS. People are LOVING 2008 server which is the same kernel as vista, though with a few things that doesn't have to be there. Hopefully MS did learn from Vista and Server 08 to really make the OS what it should be.

Remember that the target audience of vista is EXTREMELY wide and thus they have to cater to everyone, and since they do cater to everyone and they charge for almost anything manufacturer related, they do get pressure for things like DRM and other stuff that only affect negatively the user experience.

Anyways. Vista is a good and probably the best OS i've ever used, though i still feel XP is quicker in some respects (mostly because of AERO, since I can't live w/o it) Vista performs better on most scenarios except the perception of readyness and response, again... Perception of...

Anyways... They just need a new name, a few new features and thank god for not changing the driver model YET again (although the last move was for the best).

In the end what i see is that vista will not get the attention XP got and people that bought Ultimate got shafted YET again.

Thanks

i'm with you, highl, after going back to xp for 24 hours, and after having weird non responsive moments, movies freezing, and that terrible windows jitter/smear, back to server '08 :christo:

I love server 2k8, but the fact that its so damn expensive keeps me from it.

i dunno though, as they were originally saying that 7 would be more of a service pack-ish kinda thing in the end. server version of 7 is not going to be very different from the latest iteration, what i have heard. would be neat if the 'new' team can pull a genie out of a vista hat...i think unfettered drm kinda put the kibosh on any wonderful new MS OS. apple doesn't fare any better in this respect though.

unless...they pull a server style: add what you want to the OS in terms of media handling. this would be awesome for peeps who just want to use the OS as a tool, and for others that want the full entertainment package. "roles" and the options to set them up, or remove them. that is what makes server '08 sweet. this would be a fine offering, adding this kind of flexibly to a consumer OS... :christo:

I have xp 32 bit for legacy applications like VPN and the sorts that really don't work with x64.

But I just can't boot it for 10 minutes straight unless i REALLY need it...

I had vista and gave server 08 a try. I like vista and server 08 even more.

So .. M$ take a hint!
