images/news/windows.jpgContinuing an unprecedented public dialog on the future of Windows begun last week, a Microsoft senior vice president admits that the request he's hearing most often from users is pretty simple: Speed it up.

Though we won't make it a point to post a story every time a Microsoft Senior Vice President, such as Steven Sinofsky or Jon DeVaan, issues an utterance about the next edition of Windows on its newly launched corporate blog, one statement from Sinofsky this morning will raise eyebrows: In response to the blog's inaugural call for ideas from the general public about what features they'd like to see in "Windows 7," he surprisingly acknowledged that many were more interested not so much in features but in behavior.

"The most frequent request," Sinofsky wrote, "was to discuss Windows performance and/or just 'make Windows faster.' There's a lot to this topic so we expect to talk about this quite a bit over the next months."

I agree, slimming Vista down to the point it boots up faster takes a lot of tweaking.

This sucks because when I'm in the train or something, I want my system to boot asap. I don't want fancy extra's loaded, because loading means loss of batterypower.

Then, there also is offcourse, that my laptop clocks down when disconnected.
Vista at this point is so sluggish, it sometimes takes almost 10 minutes to log on.
And there is no way for me to fasten it up, I cannot do anything until I'm fully logged on. Now, don't shout "Standby" or "Hibernation" because those functions suck as well when going from wired to wireless power.

Finally, I just have to say, it's the biggest downside of Vista. It's too heavy, and there is hardly any way to tweak it.

My main request would be

Quote

Make an OS that would boot a normal full-blown setting when the system runs full power, but when on batterypower (in case of a laptop), give the option of a "slimmed down log-on", Linux (KDE actually) has this option, I can log on to my full-blown settings, or a new, empty, session. The empty session is only the bare necessities loaded. Why can't Microsoft develop something like that

ya know, i don't get this "linux boots faster than windows" thing: all the distros i have tried (up to the latest ubuntu) boot the same, if not slower than vista/server. xp is faster, hands down.

XP has had 6 years of tweaks and the such.. I have installed server 2008 on my lappy and finally it boots fast... I have server 2008 at home and it boots awesome...

So I guess.. trimming it down is possible...

I hope windows 7 gets the approach of server 2008 regarding installation.

My Gentoo installation booted waay faster then XP, because it was a minimized installation.

My main concern though is about the log-on. That takes too long sometimes.
