images/news/internet.jpgThere's yet another new search engine on the block, but this time, it's being ballyhooed as an actual challenger to Google. Cuil.com (pronounced "cool") made its public launch today and already calls itself the "biggest search engine on the web." Run by a team of former Google employees, the startup takes a slightly different approach to search than most of the big names, but whether it will be able to unseat Google—or even Yahoo—remains to be seen.

Right off the bat, the Cuil team makes a number of direct comparisons to Google, but often without actually naming the Big G. For one, Cuil brags that it has already indexed 120 billion Web pages, roughly three times as many as Google and ten times as many as Microsoft. "Rather than rely on superficial popularity metrics" like Google does, Cuil's info page says that the site contextually analyzes each page and organizes search results based on content and relevance.

Tried this earlier when I saw it via an email sub I get, unless it improves by 1,000,000% I don't see it competing with anything but itself...time will tell.

copy that...now, it kinda reminds me of the layout for "bizrate" ads...and the name...should have been "kual", as i can see detractors referring to it as "the C word"...

Are there any concrete examples (independent or not) of why it's superior? Hyperbole and hype aside, I don't see many differences in search results. Number of pages indexed is not a fair benchmark for superiority, imho. We all remember how many pages Yahoo had indexed when google kicked their ass with 1/3 as many.

The fact that they don't mine user habits is nice but we have to be honest----google wouldn't be so useful right now unless they were able to make a lot of money from advertisers which allows them to be very attractive to their stockholders. Since they are able to micro-target ads to their users, they're able to make an ish-load of money which they use to make a lot of profit. And google maps, gmail, acquisition of Youtube, book search, etc., etc., etc. I just don't see how cuil or anyone else will be able to compete by brute force.

David didn't compete by brute force. I am sure that usefulness will play a big role... if you start to find what you where looking for, better yet, if people find YOUR webpage via CUIL, you bet I will be using it.

Well to get away from the negative...at least the page is black...of course my Google is blue so that isn't enough to sway me.
