images/news/windows.jpgSome of the coolest OS features are nowhere to be found in Windows XP or Vista. Here are 18 brilliant features that Microsoft should beg for, borrow, or steal--plus tips on how you can add many of them to your PC now. Love it or hate it, Microsoft Windows is the world's most dominant operating system. But when you look at some of the hot features found in competitors such as Linux and Mac OS X, both XP and Vista can seem a little incomplete.

From intuitive interface features like Apple's application dock and Cover Flow to basic media capabilities such as ISO burning, Windows often falls short on built-in goodies. And some features that other operating systems offer by default-- such as 64-bit processing and business-networking tools--require a premium-version license in Windows.

We took a good look at a variety of OSs, from the Mac to Linux to PC-BSD and beyond, and we rounded up a list of our favorite features--few of which come standard in any version of Windows. We even considered some operating systems of yore, and recalled a couple of cool features that Microsoft still hasn't caught on to. Some of these features simply aren't available for Windows at all, owing to the way the OS is designed. But you can add most of them to XP or Vista with the help of third-party applications, and we'll show you how to get them.

1/ Expose is available for vista... made by a programmer from M$ so its available...

2/ Virtual desktops is not that useful in the end. I have tried to use it in xp and ended up always uninstalling it. Much faster to alt tab between applications and find what you are looking for, unless you are some kind of productivity geek

3/ office live anyone?

4/ messenger and remote desktop.. just hit actions -- request remote assistance

5/ restore previous versions on vista? There are a few back up solutions available.

6/ vista and xp do have some burning capabilities... maybe not mounting (which i do think its lacking)

7/ sidebar stickies are there for vista

12/ alt + print screen has worked wonders for me.

13/ we really need this !!!!! jaja kind of like an Iphone.

14/ sounds interesting :graduated: maybe windows 7?

15/ IIS I have used the web server features on windows XP!

16/ Really not needed.. more data to bloat windows

17/ HUH?

18/ I kind of agree... but... not sure there...

I really think people just complain because its M$ but i am sure they can't live w/o it...

Dammit I feel like a fanboy for M$ prods... that technet sub has really made me a fan :) :scara:

Well, Strohmeyer is/was a contributor to MacWorld and MacAddict. Maybe there's something to that.

Talking about your siggy mo...

I installed server 08... I find it no faster than vista... and its expected though, the bad side is.. NO MEDIA CENTER :graduated:

anyways... Its still a nice pice of OS... I don't get why people love server 08 yet hate vista.

Anyways... Aero installed and everything I expected to boot and load faster.... its more or less the same... I think I have some issues with RAID 0 overhead or something because my other pc with slower disks and a slower processor and less ram boots faster with vista than mine. go figure.

If you convert the server 08 to workstation 08 then it is the best of the best making vista look like a joke more than it already seems in many people eyes, if you are willing to make the changes, if I had the ability to get and run a legit non trial version of 08 at some point I certainly would.

Convert your Windows Server 2008 to a Workstation

Yes MO, the ISO burning ability is really a severe lack on XP / Vista / Server :)
