images/news/intel.jpgIntel posted price cuts on Sunday that included reductions of 50 percent on select quad-core processors. The chipmaker also introduced new Celeron and Core 2 Duo processor models.

The price of the Core 2 Quad Q6700 (2.66GHz) fell 50 percent from $530 to $266, while the quad-core Xeon X3230 (2.66GHz) saw an identical cut: from $530 to $266.

Celeron price-cut highlights include the Celeron 430 (1.8GHz), reduced 23 percent from $44 to $34 and the dual-core Celeron E1200 (1.6GHz), falling 19 percent from $53 to $43.

The dual-core Xeon 3085 (3GHz) was reduced 29 percent from $266 to $188, and the Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 (3GHz), from $266 to $183, or 31 percent.

Pentium dual-core chips saw price drops too: The E2200 (2.2GHz) and E2180 (2GHz) were cut 12 percent and 14 percent to $74 and $64, respectively.

The chipmaker introduced the dual-core Celeron E1400 (2GHz) at a price of $53 and Celeron 570 (2.66GHz) at $134.

New Core 2 Duo chips were also introduced. The E8300 (6MB cache, 2.83GHz) and the E7200 (3MB cache, 2.53GHz) at $163 and and $133, respectively.

As good as these cuts are... the q6600 didn't fall and the q6700 doesn't come in the g0 stepping... Which would have been HUGE.

Reason?

The previous generation of quads clock a lot better and require little FSB to push them :giggle:

This new generation needs at least 500Mhz FSB and that's still getting no where near the 'G0' clocks.

I don't get your post... and I re-read mine.. I think its clear what I said???

The q6600 comes in b3 and g0 steppings... the q6600 didn't drop price... So its a bummer...

The q6700 which was the one that dropped price comes only in b3 stepping with 105TDP! So... I would buy a g0 stepping rather than a b3... hence why I wouldn't buy a q6700 which was the one that dropped in pricing.

Hence what I said :cigar:

The Q6600 (G0) hasn't dropped in price (don't give a toss about the Q6700) because of the reasons I gave above.

No excuse necessary MO.

Seeing that the price cuts make things more attractive, if a man, now I said "if" were to consider a good but not necessarily the best quad CPU and MB, what would he consider??????? Oh great and magic wizards of the forum, dive into your collective intelligence and experience and help a poor ignorant brother...sigh. :giggle: :cigar:

non asus, and you should be fine :giggle: nuel is doing swell w/ a b3 stepping amd quad. i like my intel stuff ok. at this point, i would go with what your gut is telling you (after a satiating meal, of course). :cigar:

asus: i have had a love hate, and more hate relationship with them. i now avoid at any cost, and i mean that

intel: their boards and chipsets are stable, performing stuff. that said, do the least of nvidia you have to, imho...

that said: bill, intel, atm, still do fsb. in several scenarios, my former dual big single core opterons with hypertransport (and non fbdimm memory) surpass my dual quad intel rig. at this (your) juncture, i'd really give a look as to upgrade ability, and the like.

Thanks Mo, I agree with the ASUS thing. My last experience with the bios on a skt 754 MB was enough to unsell me from ASUS. I have the AMD in my sig except it now has 8GB RAM but I don't even use it. It is sitting under a desk now collecting dust. My main system is an old 3.00 Ghz Skt 775 P4 with 2GB RAM. I think I will opt for the Intel but not sure why. I have always been AMD green but I like the look, sound, and feel of blue. Why do I want a new system that I won't even probably use? I wish I could answer that. I guess the only reason is "because I want a new one to put in my sig"...sigh. If I take the plunge I'll post back.
