images/news/internet.jpgIt's up to your Web browser to make using the Internet easy and enjoyable -- it's arguably the most important piece of software you use. As the Internet becomes more integral to daily life, the browser you use is of great importance to software companies too. That's why every major browser developer is working on new versions of their product.

Fortunately, they've all released early versions of their work -- that's betas to you -- for us to poke around and play with, so we can suggest fixes and improvements that could be made before the final version is released to the general public.

The four browsers in question are Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8, Mozilla's open-source Firefox 3, Opera 9.5 and Apple's Safari 3 for Windows. All are free downloads and all try to offer something better than the competition.

With this furious battle for worldwide adoption, we've decided to put the most recent beta releases head-to-head to see which is looking to be the best, and why.

We're not benchmarking and we're not reviewing; we're simply using each browser as the average user would, to determine which we think is the coolest, which works best so far and which we expect to be the strongest offering to the general consumer.

So without further introduction, let the browser war begin. We'll start with Microsoft...

Now it isn't that bad MO. I tried IE8 and it was well done even though a Beta. There were some rendering problems but the only page that displayed the problem, and this is funny, was my MSN Home Page. MSN displayed in text only, no graphics. Everthing else displayed well and it was fast. If I selected IE 7 emulation, MSN would display as it should but that seemed to defeat the idea of even trying the Beta. Besides, have you looked at the size of the download. It is only 11 MB. Seems I remember IE being a bit more bloated than that. Seems to me that the Beta may not be much more than a shell so Redmond has something to go against the competition. But then remember, I am the eternal skeptic of the group so perhaps you should pay little attention to my ramblings :graduated: ...talker. :giggle:

FF3 is much more stable than IE8. I've been running FF3 for a few weeks and haven't noticed any problems. I only use two extensions though and they're both compatible. (Adblock Plus and FlashBlock)

I only use the adblock plus, I have been running it and I like it I did find a strange behaivior though I was dowloading a large file and it caused firefox to go very slow from clicking buttons to changing web pages, but it was only that one download.

Thanks Christo, I tried to install IE8 on my Vista Home Premy lappy and was told that the version of SP1 was not compatable with IE8. Hmmmm, so I downloaded the 400+ MB SP1 and tried to install it and was told by the install program that I already had SP1 installed. Do I detect a wonderful Redmond loop here????? Vista is truly...A Ridddle Inside a Mystery Wrapped In An Enigma...talker. :graduated:
