images/news/linux.jpgThe Ubuntu developers are moving very quickly to bring you the absolute latest and greatest software the Open Source Community has to offer. Hardy Heron Alpha 5 is the fifth alpha release of Ubuntu 8.04, and with this new alpha release comes a whole host of excellent new features.

Note: This is still an alpha release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released in April 2008.

I've got Alpha 5 running here. I'm surprised how well it works. I've had only a few very minor issues. The new features are nice, especially Wubi. I just wish they hadn't decided to put off the new theme until 8.10. It could use a new look.

I think Kubuntu 8.04 Alpha 5 includes both KDE 3.5 and 4.0, but I'm not sure. I tried KDE 4.0 a few days ago and it still isn't usable. They say to wait for 4.1...

Anyone know if this release installs on systems with AHCI set in BIOS?, as previous versions crashed the installer unless the controller was set to IDE mode.

Also, has support been extended for more on-board Wireless cards, such as the ASUS Wi-Fi AP Solo and/or Trendnet without having to resort to using the 'painful' ndiswrapper solution?

:)
