images/news/windows.jpgAs the world's most prominent operating system, Windows has dominated the tech industry for well over a decade and its competitors - Mac OS X and Linux - have failed to gain the kind of penetration Microsoft has.

But ever since the days of Windows 98, we have been forced to deal with a slew of Windows issues that have plagued individuals and companies alike. Instead of being the highly intuitive operating system Mac OS X is, Windows became bloated and difficult to use. Instead of offering sound functionality and customizability like Linux, Windows became quite the opposite.

To make matters worse, malicious hackers and spammers started developing a slew of attacks that proved deadly to Windows systems. Responding too late, Microsoft has allowed the security issue to become such a concern that some have migrated to other operating systems. And who can blame them? With Microsoft doing very little to protect them, the decision seemed quite simple.

But for all of its issues, Windows XP was still a relatively reliable operating system after Service Pack 2 was released. Once installed, SP2 offered the kind of functionality and security that we had hoped for and although there were still security concerns, the operating system worked much better than any of its predecessors and finally made sense for businesses and individuals alike.

Wow... everyone ALWAYS COMPLAINS about something, yet no one does anything...

pressing windows key + R and inputing msconfig, will launch a program that has an utility that DISABLES User Account Control.

I mean.. People want security, security they got, don't like it? YOU CAN DISABLE IT QUITE EASILY.. yes I aggree its annoying, but you can disable it easily or even tone it down. Worse.. SP1 tones it down quite well...

In the end... Vista works as well or even better than xp ever did. There were a few things that had to be changed, specifically the way the drivers worked. Each time we have had quite a wavy sailing, but have come afloat.

SP1 solves a few issues... My question is this to all those vista haters... How many BSOD's have you seen in vista compared to XP in the same time frame?

its not fair to compare a 8 year old OS with 8 years of experience writing drivers after drivers from manufacturers, to a 1 year os that just came about with its first SP.

it works..

I try and make myself affluent on any OS. I do like XP because "it just works" But I do use Vista, and dont mind it. I do have to stop and think where they put certain things in Vista.

BTW, Vista doesn't throw BSoD's It gives you the Green bar of Death when explorer crashes

well yes... GBOD jajajaja now we have a different name... but in my case.. it has crashed due to overclock. In one point in time where it WAS happening was because of some nvidia drivers and SLI.

I mean... XP WAS A NIGHTMARE, so was 2000, 98, MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, but.... in the end... all of them did great things. 98 was a lot more vulnerable than XP was and XP is a lot more vulnerable than Vista will ever be.. Anyone remember the shutdown -a virus? anyone remember the COUNTLESS updates to fix exploits used by viruses??? I haven't seen one on Vista or been victim by one either... In the end, when you want to do the most damage, you target the most amount of people, which are the M$ Software users, same thing happens with Internet Explorer and mozilla firefox (i use FF for its functionality). Recently.. IEPro 2.1 beta seems to be the gap closer between firefox and its addons and IE7. Its funny... People hate M$ yet there are quite a few skins of IE7 for FF.

98SE was one workhorse which with the correct drivers and a battery back up.. YOU NEVER EVER HAD A SINGLE ISSUE... SE is what SP2 was for XP. I think vista in SP1 has accomplished a whole lot of things...

Yes I have also been victim of the lately SP1 Configuring updates... it has happened once or twice when it was in beta stages, hasn't happened in RTM.

I like it... I go back to XP and feel a bit.... back in the 20th century :cc_surrender:

Apps start faster than XP, the file copy operation that was really annoying in the CALCULATING time has been GONE for a while... I mean, we have to give credit where credit is due... I can finally have and use more than 1.5Gbs of ram... there are quite a few things... I agree on one thing. If you have a SUPER SLOW video card like an ATI XL PCI card with 8mb.. .stick with xp and 16bit colors...

A few things I want to see....

More explotation of the WEI... Its an AWESOME IDEA... you go to a store and the game shell says... this game REQUIRES a WEI in video of 3 and 5.5 recommended.. well you can expect something out of the game...

For instance.. Crysis.. Crysis should say... REQUIRED WEI of 10 (max is 5.9 i know) Recommended... WEI of 20! well you know you can't play it with your current hardware. I am a happy camper with vista... Sticking with it.. No reason to go back. If you lack the hard disk space stick with xp.. DAMN good OS... Things will get done with vista to a point where vista will be... Vista...

SP2 anyone?
