images/news/security.jpgSeveral cities outside the U.S. have sustained attacks on utility systems and extortion demands.

Criminals have been able to hack into computer systems via the Internet and cut power to several cities, a U.S. Central Intelligence Agency analyst said this week.

Speaking at a conference of security professionals on Wednesday, CIA analyst Tom Donahue disclosed the recently declassified attacks while offering few specifics on what actually went wrong.

Criminals have launched online attacks that disrupted power equipment in several regions outside of the U.S., he said, without identifying the countries affected. The goal of the attacks was extortion, he said.

"We have information, from multiple regions outside the United States, of cyber intrusions into utilities, followed by extortion demands," he said in a statement posted to the Web on Friday by the conference's organizers, the SANS Institute. "In at least one case, the disruption caused a power outage affecting multiple cities. We do not know who executed these attacks or why, but all involved intrusions through the Internet."

Hacking the power grid made front-page headlines in September when CNN aired a video showing an Idaho National Laboratory demonstration of a software attack on the computer system used to control a power generator. In the demonstration, the smoking generator was rendered inoperable.

The U.S. is taking steps to lock down the computers that manage its power systems, however.

I had a very long and specific comment for this topic and for you specifically LT, but in the interest of the forum I will simply say there is no humor in such things, a situation like that affects the life and possibly death of people and for that I can see no humor of any kind.

Come on, Coooome ooon.. Every hospital for a long Time has Generators and other stuff like that.. every person who need Electricity 24/7, also has Generators, because Electricity may just went down, because Stations malfunction..
You just taking it too seriously, Relax, and behold the Might of Hackers.. The Unknown Geniuses..

It's like the Rage of "God", Tsunamis.. Tornados.. Soo Destructive, Soo Painful.. but at the same Time Sooo Beautiful and so Powerful...

When we have Hurricanes, I always coming out to look at them, Psychedelic, like watching the Moon, Addictive as a Drug, for my soul...

Everything has Its beauty, Even death.. Even pain..
We born to feel it, to merge with it.. Have you ever saw one of your relatives Dieing, dieing in front of you, Painful ? right.. you cry, you feel bad, you feel like this may be because of you.. but have you ever noticed, how wonderful and fantastic the Moment of pain is.
Causing yourself pain is of course quite stupid and Lame.. But when it comes to you Unexpectedly, in stealth, grabs your over your neck, this is the Beauty..

Btw, you can tell what you Think.. also please, don't call me LT, I added my Countries code only because there was already Registered user called TheBear :giggle:

I tell you if the electricity went off around here, it would be quite a bad thing, actual temp -10F with windchills of -30 to -40F and with no electicity no heat, and I can not afford backup generators, and as for "the beauty" I dont think watching either of my disabled kids suffer hypothermia would be cool. no pun intended.

-42C is -43F and that is not unheard of around here, the record is -60F or -51C And that is actual temps, with windchill its -90F or colder.
and a propane heater is expensive too, have you run one? and a propane furnace, which might be a better option is not available, I rent this place.
As to the beauty, I am not sure I want to understand that.

Well, I'm using Propane heating on my own.. (i mean whole house and water heating)

about Temps, that was just for you to note..

About the Beauty of "Everything".. It is hard for me to Express what I want to tell, in English.
It's like, for you, speaking about The supreme Matters using Vocabulary in the Language you Barely know :giggle:
You actually can, and probably you Do Misunderstood me..

Soo, thanks for Double reply :)

Thanks Gene for seeing my point, as for pain and death, I have lived it being disabled for about half my life, and watching people die, been there and done that, no thanks. Death sneaking up on us...well if the power went out as you drove down the road and you got hit and killed instantly, I wouldn't be happy, I wouldn't find it anything but sad that some hacker thought it would be funny to hurt/kill someone, anyone, even if it were you TheBear. Now granted, you'd be dead, no biggie to you, but I wouldn't be happy, your family and friends wouldn't, unless you are some huge jerk they all hate, in which case I guess maybe they'd dance on your grave, but this is doubtful. You are welcome to your opinion, just be ready to have some disagree, in this case thus far both Gene and myself moreso, I felt a bit angry as I imagine Gene did as well in reading that, not normal for me but in this case it happened. I am not asking for nor do I expect an apology or anything, I am just giving my opinion of the original topic and your comment as well, your apparent fascination with death and the "beauty" within is not shared by all apparently. I know more about Gene and his family than I do you TheBear, that doesn't make them more important but I also don't like the idea of the picture you paint as beautiful...suffering holds no beauty, moreso when it involves children. I feel more sadness for the innocent that would suffer, and Gene mentioned his children being disabled, well I knew this already but being also disabled it touches a bit closer to home I suppose, by any means I guess we agree to disagree on this whole topic of death.
