My hot water tank must be getting a downdraft or something because I've had to relight the pilot 3 times in the last month and once again tonight. I'm clueless when it comes to this kinda shite. Is that something I should be worried about?

I know it's a shot in the dark but after calling 3 different places today (all of whom said they'd need to "come out and take a look"--for a big-ass fee--), I thought someone here might be able to set me straight on whether or not I should make a big deal about it. The valve must be working right because there is no gas smell when it goes out and after I get it lit and hold the button down the flame doesn't flicker or anything. The only weirdness I noticed is that the big pipes that come out of the top---well, there's a very small and infrequent leak at one of the couplings. Other than that, it seems to work fine. But a pilot going out 4 times in a month? I've only been in one other house and that had a brand new tank and the pilot never went out. Other than that I've always been in apartments with radiators so I have no clue about this kinda stuff.

TIA for any thoughts. I know it's the internets but we seem to have great cross-section of expertise so I figured I'd ask.

mike, a leak is not ok. fix the leak. that said, a bad thermocouple. happens often. cost: $3 to $15 for part. if the tank is not leaking, vent not blocked, i'd look into replacing it...

Mike , make sure the pilot wind guard hasn't been accidentally moved or the wind from the draft opening will blow out the pilot , ps u can easily bend the wind guard to a position to better shield the pilot

Thanks for the replies MO and Stormy. I replaced the outer "door" this morning. I'll check back if that fixed it.

i think you may want to look at the PSU, seems like the drivers might be acting up. what version you running on that heater

I can't remember which driver rev I used but the burner-board says "Asus" on it.

As stated a "leak" is not OK, CO2 can kill, fix the exhaust leak first, then look for an adjustment screw at the pilot, you may just need to turn up the pilot flame
Could be a bad line, or a bad regulator though

Just over clock it till it blows up, that's what I always do, you'll get a better score on DishMark06, and your showers will be hotter, and faster too
