Sounds like the ball bearings in your SCSI controller are shot. I'd get 'em machined or just buy new ones.

gosh, everything is running fine atm. i switched out the megaraid ram module w/battery backup, and no issues so far. i guess it just must of had a wild hair...

UPDATE: after talking to LSi techs, the controller is getting an RMA. they said the memory socket might be faulty, and they will replace the card for free
all fine and good, but that means no system for the duration. as luck would have it, newegg had the raptor 150 on sale, so with the pocketbook's blessings, one has found it's way onto the nvidia onboard controller. and an added plus: i can now install the latest linux kernel, as the recent iteration of distros recognize the sata! compiz fusion, here i come!!!
