images/news/generic.jpgSure, Nero 8 is due out on October 1st. But if you can't wait to get your hands on the next version of this popular CD/DVD burning application, you can download a trial version today.

Here’s a recap of what’s new in Nero 8:

* Newly-designed Nero StartSmart user interface. Prime functions like burning and ripping audio and data discs can now be accessed directly, letting users complete projects with one-click functions.
* Optimized for Vista - includes DiscCopy (a Vista sidebar gadget) that lets users copy a disc in just one click.
* Edit photo slide shows and create High Definition video in both Blu-ray BD-AV and HD DVD video formats.
* Nero RescueAgent allows users to restore deleted files and recover data from CDs and DVDs that may have been lost due to scratched discs, interrupted recording operations, or poor recording quality.
* Multimedia, backup, and recovery features.
* Live icons allows users to see what is in a file without opening it.
* Rich Preview pane offers direct access to files from within the Windows Explorer browser.

944.8 MB? Is Nero taking a page out of Symantec's guide to bloatware?

Nope, they are trying to keep up with the Redmond Bloaters, which is a famous west coast software team...talker. :rofl_mini:

Requirements:
1.5 GB disc space for a typical installation of all components

Features:
* Optimized for Vista

Makes sense. :rofl_mini:

But really, that's insanely huge.

Well they do keep adding more and more features. I'm sure the ability to do the HD-DVD and Blu-ray stuff added some more. And the new interface thing.

Here's a question to chew on: Do you think the bloat is due to the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD addition or the Vista compatability or perhaps both?...talker. :rofl_mini:

When the app takes as much as an OS I think it has went overboard, not saying it takes the same as Veetsa but sheesh, at almost 1GB that is crazy and if anything like 7 during a typical install way too much overheard!

I would say "the whole installation suite" is quite large, but what you install out of the suite makes things smaller. Keep in mind, this also has a label maker, and other things not all users need. and yes talker, HD probably makes a difference

:rofl_mini: It now goes to the bathroom for you as well. Sheeze, what the hell do you need that much code for? Should we dual boot with Vista and Nero?

Use Nero 7 LITE or better still Nero 6, they both do the job wonderfully and have no bloat to boot. :rofl_mini:
