 while replacing the fan in my psu, i inadvertently unplugged one of my scsi raid0 drives. not noticing this, i rebooted, only to find i had (so it appeared) lost one of the six drives! after reattaching the signal cable, and looking for some way to reinitialize the array, i still got the error that a drive had failed. i had to face the fact that this was not going to be repaired like a software sata array...so i went ahead and cleared the drives, opting for a raid5 setup. as i initialized the raid5, i noticed my "lost" drive was now present and fully functional: looks like once a scsi raid0 drive is disconnected, and the storage host is booted, you are no longer able to reinitialize? i lost 50 gigs of tv/movies, apps, etc.

I wouldnt even entertain the idea of a raid0 on more than 2 drives, or more than 4 on a raid 5. If more than 4 drives id start using raid6 or raid 5e.

Just the risks you know...

geez MO that does suck but the fact learned is good, unlike Visentinel, I just use a 0+1 array with the 4 x 36 gig raptors in raid 0 and a half of a 320 gig sata 2 seagate for the +1 backup in the array, but I think u may have known this MO..........(or not)....I haven't talked to u in so long on skype , I forgot who the f@#$ you are .......hehehehehhehehehe

there are so many raid configs you can do and also nested raids, the possibilities are endless up to the size of your bank account, one thing i rly do enjoy is storage technologies next to overclocking.

One day i hope i get to play with like 10 hard drives and a rly awesome raid card.

me too. hehe at one point, i was thinking of setting up a backplane (the site "scsiforme" has some awesome deals ever so often. my host will do internal/external, and manage 30 drives), but i don't have much to store, though i was thinking of using the rig as a household server, and have a mini rig desktop...

having a server is nice actually, however i havent spent money into storage for my server coz i preffer to pump the performance of a RAID into my main machine, i dont have the money to have multiple performance systems so i keep the scope pinned on just my system, the server gets first dibs on the handmedowns and my mums PC gets the stuff after that lol.

Tho i do have 200GB of storage in the server.... but its just a spare pata drive.

Right now I have 500Gb on my Matx rig in raid 0, I have used about 410Gb of that, so pritty soon I will need to invest in two 1Tb drives I think.

Only problem is before I do that I would lke to upgrade to an HDMI Monitor/Video card  I dont really have that kind of money right now. I may just buy a Fatality motherboard and use its hdmi for movies and keep my 7800...

5x 500GB's in raid5 might be more cost effective and u get some redundancy to boot.
