Linky. Snip:

The throttling works like this: A few seconds after you connect to someone in the swarm the Sandvine application sends a peer reset message (RST flag) and the upload immediately stops. Most vulnerable are users in a relatively small swarm where you only have a couple of peers you can upload the file to. Only seeding seems to be prevented, most users are able to upload to others while the download is still going, but once the download is finished, the upload speed drops to 0. Some users also report a significant drop in their download speeds, but this seems to be less widespread. Worse on private trackers, likely that this is because of the smaller swarm size

well, after a bit more poking around, the shell accounts sound goofy, unless they have a big pipe:

Quote

Dozens of people trying to all max out their huge, throbbing broadband connections through an unsuspecting shell proxy that’s a “2GHz x86″ with a “10Mbps colocation” and are wondering why it doesn’t work. It’s like those guys who figure out that they can turn used restaurant grease into free biodiesel fuel. Great idea, if you’re the only person doing it, but if you get all evangelical about it and a hundred people show up and fight over the grease, no one gets enough for it to be worthwhile.

silenceisdefeat.com ran out of grease!

other services have a no-no clause when it comes to p2p downloading.

I've been using Secure Tunnel for a while now and I can give them a recommendation. Their software didn't initially work on x64 (works now) and it doesn't work on Vista so I use SSH to connect to my account. Works great. Download speeds about 500-600kb, ups are about 35-50kb. Eniparadoxgma can vouch for it as well. Good proggy for this type of nonsense and to bypass things like University-run networks to play games and whatnot.

MO, I just read that link to whalesalad. Within Windows, setting up a secure shell for torrents is nowhere near that much work. In Linux, it's not even work. And yep, putty is sweet.

ST FTW!!!1!eleven!

Hi, I'm eniparadoxgma, and not only am I a secure tunnel subscriber, but...well I'm a subscriber. Anyhow, I recommend it highly. It's the only thing enabling me access to new and unusual nun pr0n on a daily basis and it keeps me knee-deep in pr0ner shovelin'.

It's simple to use as well. I have experience with the older version of the software, the newer version, and the SSH client so if anyone needs any help or has any questions feel free to ask away.

Well, you'd have to sign up for an account at Secure Tunnel (hell, tell them you heard about the company from x64bit.net to give some love here  )

You can go month-to-month just to try it. For XP (32 or 64bit) you would then download their setup software and run it. Open it up, enter your username and password, and you'll be connected. After that, every type of application you open that makes any network connections will be "caught" by the ST software and it will ask you if you want that traffic to pass through the ST proxy, make a direct connection, or "Block" the app from making any connection. That last part is handy to keep things from phoning home if you don't want them to.

If you are on Vista, you would have to download a copy of SSH and a grab a reg file from here. Install SSH but don't open it and double-click the reg file you downloaded. Then, start up SSH and enter your ST username and password. If you connect properly, you shall see this:

Attached Image: st.jpg

Once connected via SSH, start up your torrent program (I use uTorrent) and find your connection preferences so you can choose to "connect via proxy." Should look similar to this:

Attached Image: st2.jpg

The proxy name is webtunnel.secure-tunnel.com and you just use your regular ST username and pwd. The port has to be 8080 though.

That's it for torrents. To use SSH with an ST account and surf anonymously, you would (in FF anyway) select Tools and then Options and then Connection. Select Manual Proxy Configuration and enter 127.0.0.1 for the http addy and port 8080. Then check the box to "use this for all blah blah" so everything is there. After that, check your IP at Shields Upor whatever to make sure your going through the tunnel. That be it.

later.

No worries Nvy. Couple things I forgot to mention-----> you will have to make sure that port 8080 is forwarded on your router/firewall like similar apps.

And since I'm fluent in crazy, I can translate this for the Enip. impaired:

Without it, I would not be able to share my *nix iso's with the community at large. It also allows me to participate in online gaming as my network blocks most gaming ports.

There ya go!

well, i'm now a proud user in the ssh scene  thanks ep and banj. banj0, in the firefox fields, the second to last one ("no proxy for..."), do you leave this blank as default, or...because firefox defaulted to entering the 127 addy there...
