my daughter's 7800gtx is having heat issues, and is on it's way out. i'm thinking of getting a dx10 card for myself, and giving here my 7900gtx. i am looking at the ati and nvidia offerings (the 8800gts 640 looks great, as does the 2900xt in the price range). i know these new cards have no support in linux as of late, so i could go either way here. what are your thoughts as to a choice?

I'd say the 8800, seems to win out in more of the tests. Also, I think you'll get drivers sooner then with the ATI's. I'm fully happy with my EVGA 8800gts 640mb superclocked. You thought about getting a cheapo card until the next major lineup comes out?

thanks chris. this is the one i was looking at:

the price is right. i don't game, but like high quality settings for everything else. the ati would allow gpu folding, and whatever they bring to movie stuff. the new gen of nvidia and ati will of course be expensive when they arrive, and i just watch movies and check my email...maybe a landscape render or two...

For driver support, I agree with Chris that nVidia would be the way to go. I've also been reading up on performance comparisons between the 2900XT and the 8800GS flavors and can't find any definite conclusions. Some report that the 2900 outperforms, some report the opposite. One thing that seems constant though is that the 2900 is pretty damned loud.
I'm buying this card tomorrow. Can't wait. Good luck bro!

Yep, it is really a great card. I couldn't wait for online and picked one up today. It's at standard 500mhz core clock speed though. And no Coolbits in Vista.
For now though, every game I have is maxed out so a standard clock will be fine. Maybe nTune will work down the road.
Good recommendation bud, this thing rocks!

Oh, I have the superclocked. I like having the overclock already, cause if it breaks they can fix it! lol

The store I got it from just had the stock clocked evga card. I'm pretty confident that the core will go to 580-600 though. The heatsink evga used seems pretty nice.

lol, it turns out it was the monitor...the problem went away after a day, so i assumed it was a heat issue. then it started all over again: turns out that after unplugging the monitor, then switching dvi ports, everything was ok. for a few minutes. upon unplugging for the third time, i noticed the issue occurring while the monitor had text ("no signal") during the time disconnected. glad i didn't go out and spend the $$$ on a new card...

it was a two year old lcd (ag neovo). it might be the power supply. we have a spare 15", so there is a little time to shop
