images/news/ps3.jpgLast night while you slept Sony’s little elves were busy unrolling the new update for PS3 and PSP. The North American release was thought to be coming along later this week but apparently it’s out there today. How long have you been staring at that default background now? Well the good news is you can get ready to decorate your cross media bar with high definition video.
The PSP patch isn’t quite as significant as the one for PS3. It’s only a .01 update that will bring your PSP system to 3.52. Besides a few security revisions Sony says the patch will let your PSP play more games on the PlayStation Network.
The real news is the PS3 1.90 firmware revision. While not the most significant update it has some interesting features. For instance the revision will provide emoticons in messages but sorry, no in-game XMB support L.
Possibly the most significant change if you’re a Blu-ray user is the 24Hz setting over HDMI. So you can finally be sure you’re viewing 1080P at 24Hz.
Here is a rundown of exactly what you can expect from PS3 1.90.
* Menu includes "eject disk"
* Triangle button ejects games/CDs/movies in the XMB
* XMB backgrounds
* Change the folder classification
* Emoticons
* Change CD output to 44.1/88.2/176.4kHz
* Force 24Hz output for Blu-ray over HDMI
* Change PS3 video settings in-game
* "Bit Mapping" in the "Music Setting"
* Change settings like upscaling while playing PS and PS2 games
* Add bookmarks
* Web browser security function in the browser's tool section
* Avatar moves during audio visual chat
It's a step in the right direction but I know many PS3 users are clamoring for more customizability inside the box - more Internet radio, store your own music and most of all XMB in game. Do we see a 2.0 on the horizon?
