images/news/amd.jpgAMD Monday will slash prices by as much as 30 percent on its Athlon 64 X2 dual-core microprocessor series, according to a system builder with a long-standing business relationship with the chip giant.

The system builder, who preferred to remain anonymous, said manufacturer prices for the top-of-the-line Athlon 64 X2 6000+ would drop from $241-per-unit to about $170. The price of an Athlon 64 X2 4000+ would be cut from about $90 to $69, he said.

AMD would not comment on price cuts for its Athlon line.

"AMD does not comment on rumors or speculation," the company said in a statement.

Fry's Electronics July 2 listed the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ at $169.99 on its Web site. That listing represented an at-cost offering of the chip ahead of the scheduled July 9 price cut, according to the system builder.

Fry's had removed the $169.99 listing as of July 5, when the retailer listed the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ at $229.99. That particular chip was tagged by Fry's as "Sold Out."

The Frys' Ad for July 4th had an Intel Q6600 & ECS P4M900T motherboard for $299.99-

regular price of $634.99

Could be part of the same price break?

That'd be fantastic. Let's hope.

If these cuts hold true and with the rock bottom prices of DDR2, I may dig up some bucks for a 6000 rig. I am probably only dreaming but the nice part about dreams is that they can be as big as you want them to be.

These cuts, if genuine, may and may not help AMD. What they really need is not cheaper CPUs but some that will make people stand up and take notice. Cutting prices is, in a sense, a bribe and that type of business has no loyalty and never lasts...talker. :talker:

MO, you of all people should know that it doesn't matter if you need something or not!! It's just cool to have!! Besides, the new Crysis game is programmed to utilize quad core, so if you want a reason that is mine! Also, if I'm not mistaken you have had 4 processors on your machine for a long time now!! :talker: :chriso: So, just ask yourself that question!!

lol, yeah, i guess. but i replaced the four cores with two big single cores, and noticed a vast speed improvement in all apps i was using (photoshop, toying w/3d stuff, etc>) at the time. hey, they (quads) can't hurt :chriso: if i was looking to do a new system, i'd hit it :talker:
