images/news/hardware.jpgAn article at News.com caught my eye today. It wasn’t so much the subject itself, rather the implication. The title of the story is “Can cryptography prevent printer-ink piracy?” The gist of the article is using cryptography tech to make it more difficult for printers to use cheaper ink from “unauthorized sources”. What got my goat was the way they said it:

Quote

ryptography Research Inc. (CRI), a San Francisco company, is developing chip technology aimed at helping printer manufacturers protect this primary source of profit. The company’s chips use cryptography designed to make it harder for printers to use off-brand and counterfeit cartridges.

“We’re not saying we can end piracy (emphasis mine), but our system is designed to recover from failure,” said Kit Rodgers, CRI’s vice president of business development. News.com

So.... buying cartridges that aren't from the same brand makes you a pirate as well? What's next, buying a power cable that's not made by the same company as the PSU, you're a pirate?

:roadrunner: What a bunch of bull-lar-key! It won't stop hardly anything if you think about it. Island Inkjet is an example of a company that refills ink, so you could just reuse the cartridge until the heads went out (if there are heads on the cartridge). Pfft! :panic:

Geez, I guess I am a pirate. I have an HP 4600n Color Laser printer. The HP toner cartridges locally are @$220.00 USD. I buy remanufactured cartridges from a company in Florida through Amazon. The last one cost me $70.00 USD including shipping. Take a guess as to why I buy them from Amazon. Greed, greed, greed. The word should be in the name or logo of HP, Lexmark, Brother, Canon, and perhaps a few more...talker. :roadrunner:

Yeah no kidding talker!! They give the printers away cause they know they'll make a killin on the ink!

Yeah I got mine for work from a company called lazerpro. It is located in Peoria IL, google them you might find a better deal!
