It's different and they do indeed look like morons, but I don't know why it's any worse than duck hunting with decoys. Really, all hunting/fishing/trapping involves tricking an animal and then killing it. Some methods are dumber than others.
I think brewin did the best summary of it. I've never hunted but I have many uncles who do and also my father has teached me the pleasures of fishing. I think they are both very pleasant activities (I don't like to refer to fishing as a sport...), but this is simply not fishing nor hunting. All the fun of the waiting and the struggling is gone. Nothing is left of fishing other than the fact that they catch fishes... As chriso said, the safety issue is not a big deal. IMO a hunting rifle is way more dangerous than a bow, as piercing as the arrow may be.
I don't know about the situation with those fishes and the Great Lakes or anything, but anyway... These are just dumb guys trying a dumb way of fishing. For the cruelty thing, I think fishing and hunting (regular way, not those guys' way) is, yes, enjoyable, but also all of the meat from the animal and the fish are used (I'm talking about intelligent hunters who bring their catch to a good butcher). In pork or beef industries, animals are treated like s|-|it, killed in a (I believe) painful and cruel way, they just take what they need and scrap the rest. On the opposite, I believe a good hunter or fisherman i one who tries to kill his catch the fastest and less painful way possible. There is a big deal of respect for the animal here. Once caught, the deer is taken to a butcher where, like I previously said, every piece is used, bones, meat, fat, etc. Hunting is not simply a "sport", the animal/fish you catch is a reward, like a medal you win after a good race. You have worked hard in order to gain it, so you cherish it.
Those morons/fishers/hunters/cavemen don't work for what they get and they have no respect for the animal, so I believe they cannot be counted as real good hunters/fishers.
Well, this is what I think of it, sorry for the big text
