VMware Workstation 6 is a hypervisor, software that lets a workstation run multiple operating systems and applications on the same physical machine.

Workstation 6 supports Microsoft Corp.'s new Windows Vista as a guest or host operating system. It also displays an image on multiple monitors, which is important for users in financial services, computer-aided design and other environments. Workstation 6 also features the previously announced ACE Option Pack, which allows a user to store a virtual machine setup on a portable device, such as a USB drive, to transfer to another computer.

The aim of all the upgrades is to improve the usability of a virtual workstation, said James Phillips, senior director of software life-cycle solutions at VMware.

NVY, you wouldn't happen to know if it now supports 4 virtual processors would you? I didn't see anything in the change log. I currently have to run 2 instances of Linux SMP on my quads instead of just one because VMware server only sees 2 cores. I'd gladly pay for the Workstation app if it does. :chriso: This is of interest to all that fold. :chriso:

It doesn't. You would have to buy VMware Infrastructure Standard for 4-way. It's $4,000.

What if you ran two instances of VMware? I wonder what the performance would be like.

I'm running 2 instances on each of my quads now. Neither is OCed yet so it's like running 2 stock E-6600s. :chriso:

Yah! I was waiting for the 4/22 price drops. Better two Q6600s than 1 QX6700.
