Microsoft has started a new policy of authenticating the Windows operating system. Previously when a user has installed Windows they had to activate the OS with Microsoft online or by phone. One could understand why Microsoft put the activation process into place, with all the pirating that was taking place with early verisons of Windows.

Now Microsoft has taken authentication of the Microsoft Validation to a whole new level. Starting now, they will be checking your operating system every month. Now, I'm not saying this development is bad or good. I'm just wondering what impact this has on our daily lives. Ever since I received an email stating this new policy I've been wondering why Microsoft felt the need to validate each copy of Windows every month and have come up with a couple of reasons why...

If you have two computers and activated the second computer by calling Microsoft to get around the online activation failure, they will be able to detect that 2 different computers are running off of one license and shut both down.

They cant simply shut computers down

I think they are validating Windows, and trying to see how many computers are running off of one license, they are also probably recording all the IP addresses for each version, and I wouldnt doubt if they check the names of the people who own those IP addresses, so if you arent running the original version of that Windows XP it wont update anymore. I know my 32bit version was off of a license, but wasnt the original, and for some odd reason it became corrupted about two days after I denied the update.. I'm going to go out and buy Windows XP from a store when I get paid next week, but could someone explain to me why when I go to most computer stores you cannot find even one copy of Windows XP?

Hey godless dont they have Wal-mart in Canada. They always seem to have XP at the ones in the states, at least the ones I've been to. The prices are also compatible with places like newegg and Tigerdirect. But there other online software dealers that have some amazing prices. I just do not know how trustworthy they may be. Good luck bro. ;)

Oh yeah, personally I have no problem with the new validation process too many people get screwed buying systems with bogus XP operating systems. Just my 2 cents.

Well, here's one for you all to think about:

When I bought my new system, I installed my old windowsXP license... AND called MS to ask how much it would cost me to upgrade the license to my new system.

So, they answered me:

Quote

You'll have to buy a new license, despite you having a retail version

Well, I'm ok sortoff with that, though it's strange, but ok.

So I asked if they had special dual-core versions. Guess what they answered!!

I'd suggest you then buy two licenses, since Windows is officially licensed per CPU

Ok, well, I guessed it wouldn't be smart then to tell them my previous system was a AuthenticAMD Dual Athlon MP system ;)

Dual / quad core still means a single CPU so if you were told you had to but another licence, then MS is talking out of its rear.
