Vista upgrade invalidates your XP key

If you choose to purchase an upgrade version of Windows Vista to upgrade XP, you will no longer be able to use that version of XP. Either on another system, or as a dual-boot option. The key will be invalidated, preventing activation.

From Vista’s EULA:

13. UPGRADES. To use upgrade software, you must first be licensed for the software that is eligiblefor the upgrade. Upon upgrade, this agreement takes the place of the agreement for the software you upgraded from. After you upgrade, you may no longer use the software you upgraded from.

Are they serious? That's nuts. I pay for an XP license and can't use it if I upgrade with an upgrade version of Vista. That sucks. I'm very annoyed by this.

Yup......

Just don't give them your credit card or pin number.......they may invalidate that too. :)

you can always call to get validation. I have used the key on another computer

If ya dont like to phone'em ya still can change our XP key before upgrading... this way Vista 'invalidates' a bad key insted of yours !

I'm not sure and havent tryed it, but it should work :)

To deactivate your XP just change ´the value of OOBETimer in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents and run %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a to enter a new key.

We shouldn't have to do all that crap. If I pay for two licenses I fully expect to be able to use them. Doesn't matter if the licenses are for two different OSs. I payed good money for my XP license. I should still be able to use it if and when I like.

There is now a workaround for this to save your XP license :)

Means installing Vista twice though.....how painful!

I still think it's crazy that I can't use two licenses (that I paid for) without hassle.

I think its designed that way so you cant go back to XP once you have realised that you have made the biggest mistake of your life.............
