i finally caved and built another box. it's a gamer-ish ( ) maximus IV gene-z w/i5 2500k (went with this, as after 3 years of running dual quads, and not seeing any real world benefit, i figured a cheap, unlocked, non HT 4 banger would be a better bang-for-buck choice), and an asus 560 ti top gpu (the ati hd 6950 2gb went back. video playback was 'plastic' at best, and those drivers...ouch), 8 gigs of 'vengeance' (lol!) 1600, and a cpu cooler that was originally on one of my opterons (zalman heatpipe copper fin thingy). 5 ghz on air (vrms are not even warm, the base of the hsf at room temp to the touch:

it was all fairly cheap
(though i did splurge on red t.b.appolish fans )
