Imagine this. One of the world's most powerful monopolies puts 10,000 people to work for five years to create one new product. And nobody is really sure if anyone wants it. How's that for a gamble?

That's what we have with Windows Vista, the new computer-operating system from Microsoft that debuted last week for businesses and, next month, for consumers. There has been so much buildup for this moment that you would expect Vista to cure cancer.

I really enjoyed that read. 10000 people working on Vista over 5 years. Scary numbers

Yes, these numbers are really scarry ! :chriso:

The initial idea of Microsoft was very good and daring; an operating system completely new, built on the pillars Indigo, Avalon and WinFS. Many believed that the new Windows would really change the way people interacted with computers and data.

When Microsoft decided to abandon the concept of Longhorn and restart the project from the code of Windows Server 2003, I could feel a lot of disappointment mainly for part of technology enthusiasts. In this scenery, Microsoft had to show attractions for its operating system, Windows Vista, pointing out some security, management and multimedia features and also lots of cosmetics. Microsoft so made its new OS in arround 2 years, lefting behind 3 years of hard work and money, what makes think that they really didn't know what they were promissing and what people were expecting when it all started.

But in the end of the day Microsoft ended up getting rid of the shame. Millions will migrate to Vista and they will feel satisfied and happy. Anyways it is lamentable that Microsoft couldn't accomplish the promise.

It is a real shame that the time and money couldn't produce sweeter fruit. Maybe if there was some real competition for MS the story could have been different. MS really doesn't have any competitors for if it did those other companies could have and should have taken advantage of the goofs and delays bringing forth the "Golden OS of our Dreams". Oh! and at half the price.

Even if that were half true and if MS felt competition breathing down its neck their approach would not have been so all encompassing. They would not have bit off more than they could chew. I think the result of their new OS (Vista) could have had the splash that we all expected.

But it is not the case. MS really doesn't have any competition at all. For the future to be bright we need new genius backed by billions . Otherwise we will feel like we are being walked down the garden path all over again.

What do you think?
