"Opinion: Vista is finally—we think—arriving shortly. But, which, if any, Vista is the one you should buy for your home or company?

Eventually, we're going to see Vista come out. Yes, I know, even at this late date, Vista is still getting unexpected delays—it was set to go to manufacturing Oct. 25, but it's not going to make it—but it is on its way.

My question, though, is: What version will actually work for you come that day?"

An interesting bit of info. in the article that I wasn't aware of is that the Starter Edition can only access 256MBs of RAM, and you can only run three applications on it at a time. Assuming it's true, that is just flat out ridiculous. Did anyone else know about these artificial limitations or have I just not been keeping up with the latest idiocy news coming out of Redmond?

I believe the closer we get to the RTM of Vista there are going to be more and more "Oh, by the way..." statements coming from Redmond. I have tried the Betas, and the RCs. While the OS is kinda neat there are too many anamolies concerning everyday use and too much contact through the OS to Microsoft. I will play with the OS and may even buy an OEM version (to save some bucks) if it becomes available but as to making Vista my primary OS, that day is far in the future...if ever. Just my thoughts...talker. :talker:

I knew of the limitations, also it is important to note that one license can only be reinstalled once. Thats a total of two times for each cd key...on all versions.

If anyone takes offense to the following statement let me know and I will remove it:

Fuc|< Vista.

Ironic because Stanic already bought my copy via Intel Edge...

Talker, just out of curiosity, what program are you using to monitor this? There aren't any 2 way firewalls that work in x64 Vista are there?

Hi WFO,
What I was referring to is probably more for the RTM than the RCs. According to numerous articles, Vista will "phone home" regularly to verify that the OS is genuine. I don't really like the idea of MS being notified on a regular basis about my system. I know what they "say" they are checking but what about the things that MS doesn't say they are checking. This was a problem recently with MS and WGA in XP. When it was revealed that WGA was sending info the MS servers without user knowledge, a WGA change was made. With Vista, MS is telling us upfront that this will be happening and heaven forbid that something messes up and WGA reports your very legal copy as being bad. Overall, I see this as an EXTREME invasion of privacy which of course I do have a choice about. I simply won't buy Vista. I will stay with XP x64 for as long as I can which should be for a year or two, maybe longer. At that point I may have to check out the Penguin or maybe move away from PCs all together and go with (this is so hard to say)...a MAC...talker.
