Many of you noticed the smaller chip that accompanies G80 on the GTX board. You can clearly see it on the site.

We popped the question as we wanted to know what it is doing. It turns out that the small chip on the Geforce 8800 cards is an Nvidia NVIO chip. It provides dual 400MHz RAMDAC and Dual - Dual Link DVI output, TV Out and HDCP. Our informative friends call the chip External Video I/O Chip or simply External RAMDAC. We don’t have any idea why Nvidia needed that, as RAMDAC has been normally part of the chip for generations.

That's not a DX10 rendered image. It's an Artists impression of what FX may look like running this new tech.

The UK prices are starting to leak a bit now......seemingly.......the GTS will be same price as an 7950 (£350 or around that) and that GTX will be £150 on top of that (£500) :yahoo:

What one has to ask oneself is.......does the performance difference between the 2 flavours warrant an extra £150?? (almost the cost of a decent card in itself)

I would suspect not.

BOTH Nvidia's upcoming G80 and ATI's yet-to-come-in-2007 R600 chips have native support for HDMI. Actually, maybe Nvidia has this on its I/O chip but the bottom line is that the G80-based Geforce 8800 GTX and GTS have native HDMI support.

It's buried in the chip, along with native HDCP support. The firms just need to pay half a cent to Intel for a key embedded in the card bios and you get yourself a HDMI/HDCP capable card.

Nvidia and ATI are paying a $10.000 annual membership fee and they are willing to pay four cents for the HDMI royalty as well.

The only catch is that you need to make the PCB to include the HDMI connector on a graphic card. This should not be a big problem as, video-wise HDMI is DVI - it works the same way, just the connector is different, and it can drive a audio signal while DVI can't.
The Inquirer

This is the news I have been waiting for!!! I will be waiting for a HDMI card for sure. No point in buying a DVI that will be out-dated soon. :)
