» G80 to require 450W of power

DailyTech reports that NVIDIA's upcoming G80 GPU will recommend a 450W power supply, and an 800W PSU for running SLI. In a follow-up article they also list G80's specs: 575MHz core clock for the 8800 GTX high-end model and 500MHz for the lower-end GeForce 8800 GTS.

The 8800 GTS will also come with 768MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 900MHz with a 384-bit memory interface and 128 unified shaders (NVIDIA's stream processors) running at 1350MHz.

PS If you go to the link deimos47 is one of the dumbest people I have seen in a while, high power consumption does not translate to more heat, inefficiently translates to heat... And needing a 450watt psu does not mean it will always use that the full amount...+ a 450watt psu is 450 watts if kept at 20c...which is impossable...so its actually more like a 280-310watt psu... ok rant about idiot over...

I thought so as well. I bet the 8800 GTS will only need one PCI-E Connector for power...

THE LAUNCH OF G80 is imminent, and it will happen during the GeForce LAN3 in San Jose. The event website has been updated will all the necessary details, and it is interesting to see that the main partner for the event is now AMD, while Intel is in fifth place as a sponsor, under AMD, Antec, BFG and EVGA.
The price of 8800GTX will be sold at $650, but the recommended price of the 8800GTS is set at "lowly" $449, or probably €499 in €uroland.

For this amount of money, you will get a black PCB which is cooled by a dual-slot monster, albeit a silent one. On that PCB, there will be a chip with 700 million transistors, but with a quarter of units disabled - so, expect 96 Shaders, or "Stream Processors", as Nvidia is probably going to peddle them. They are clocked at 1.2GHz, while the rest of the GPU works at 500MHz. 640MB of GDDR3 memory is clocked at 800MHz DDR and it offers 64GB/s of bandwidth, all courtesy of a flexible memory controller, 320-bit wide in GTS.
The Inquirer

Well, finally some pricing info. That really isn't that bad in my opinion. Granted I can't afford it, but in a few months it'll come down I am sure. Well, at least it will come down when ATI brings their monster out of the closet!!

Well that says it only needs a 450 watt psu, but how the hell do you power it with two pci express connectors? I have 1 pci express slot, and one that looks like one (used for dual sata), only thing i can think of is the 2nd pci express slot has a molex, if thats true I can run it... the GTX is way too expensive I can afford the GTS, but definitely not the GTX which is $650US, also the price will go up due to high demand, so I wouldnt doubt to see it at $700US or more, if those rumors are true, anyway that would make the unit about $900CA which is way too expensive (with tax)..

I will need to use 4 molex connectors to power it. :P
But since I have no Optical drives I think I can pull off the power requirements.

It will not run in x64 or xp correct? You have to run it in Vista?

Well thats good to know, I was under the impression I would have to run RC1 to make it work.

Ya, but that price is frakkin' horrible (with extra frakk), i mean i can get a high-end dx9 card for half that price easy, so now we all know how Nvidia will manage to sell the 8800 (by almost doubling its price) :P

Of course the price is high. What did you expect? I am mean they got their DX10 card out almost 4 months before ATI get's their card out to compet with it. So, once ATI gets rolling out the cards the prices will fall a lot. But until then they are kind of a monopoly on DX10 cards. So just wait!! You won't have a game that can run dx10 until probably April anyways.

No way, 9 series won't come for a long time I bet. Look how long we have been at the 7 series now!! I can maybe see a 8850 or something to that affect.

i dunno, i think this card is just to get christmas $$$ from us. the mem and controller are an odd sort, big die...
and i am thinking along scaras' line here: this is the first dx10 piece, ati is "waiting" with the full width 512 mem controller and the rest. i know some of us will just "have to have" the 8800gtx (you know who you are :P) :cool2:
