Today, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced that the PS3 has helped Stanford University's Folding@home program to be recognized by Guinness World Records. On September 16, 2007, Folding@home surpassed one petaflop, achieving a computing milestone that had never before been reached by a distributed computing network. The over 670,000 unique PS3 users who have registered to the Folding@home network achieved the petaflop mark by themselves on September 23, 2007.

"To have Folding@home recognized by Guinness World Records as the most powerful distributed computing network ever is a reflection of the extraordinary worldwide participation by gamers and consumers around the world and for that we are very grateful," said Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and Folding@home project lead. "Without them we would not be able to make the advancements we have made in our studies of several different diseases. But it is clear that none of this would be even remotely possible without the power of PS3, it has increased our research capabilities by leaps and bounds."

"To have PS3 play such a large role in allowing Folding@home to be honored by Guinness World Records is truly incredible," said Masayuki Chatani, Executive Vice President & Chief Technology Officer, Technology Platform, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "This record is clear evidence of the power of PS3 and the contributions that it is making to the Folding@home network, and more importantly, scientific research."

It is now the most powerful distributed network in the world. Link to story.

"60% of the networks (sic) total output is generated by PS3 owners and with over 670,000 users, the total power of the network has risen above a petaflop (one thousand trillion floating point operations per second)."

Ok i see your point. I have had a WU stuck in the queu since this morn. The new Q6 client seems to be a little touchy. I am in the process of bringing back a Linux SMP to this forum. As of late the SMPs have dropped a little off. Not my fault! :(

Ok banjo, I am not sure where this info comes from. But I do know that no one I know would prefer a PS3 over a Linux client. They just can not compete. Points per Linux averqages 1700 points and a PS3 averages 900. In about the same frametimes. Salute!!!

It's pretty simple. The # of gamers with PS3s outnumber those with decent computers willing to fold. I'm not sure about the whole teraflop/petaflop thing but no PS3 can outpoint a properly configured Q6600! To me this means the quad is doing more useful work. Ummm... 3300+ points compared to 900 daily? If Stanford has it wrong they need to correct it. :(

Well I've decided to bring back a dual core Linux SMP client here. The Linux clients have become slightlly slower but still waste a PS3!!! :(

I think my opty will find it comfortable here. :(

The points depend on the capabilities of the client. The PS3 client is more specialized than the Linux SMP client. Hopefully Sony will continue to improve the client and increase the types of WUs it can process. Regardless, 670,000 PS3 clients is hugely beneficial to the project. I'm happy with mine.

Mo I have not run a GPU client as of yet. And I understand the overall production of the PS3 client. I was comparing it one to one against the Linux client. From what I have heard the GPU client is very similiar to the PS3 client. It will smoke the standard Windows client but will still fall short to the Linux client. I am not trying to promote the Linux client it does have its short commings, but I have to wonder? If you are running a dual or quad core would not two instances of the standard Windows client produce 900 ppd??? Maybe not but it is something to consider, WFO is familiar with the ATI GPU client, he would be able to fill you in on the ins and outs. :(

I have no experience with the GPU client. I know that the SMP clients are generally better. I believe that the GPU client actually uses one whole core also. If I'm right, that would suck. But we can always use the points.

I don't have a dog in this fight USM. But if the numbers reported are true, and the PS3 community now makes up 60% of the entire f@h universe, that is significant. Especially considering that the PS3 and its Cell weren't released all that long ago.

Yup, Sony made it so easy that people who have never even heard of F@H can join just by pressing a few buttons. I doubt more than 1% keep their PS3s on 24/7, but 1% is still several thousand.
