Have you ever had an AOL Account and needed to cancel it? Is it really this hard?

Some may think that this was an isolated incident- but not me.
My Dad had AOL for years-
When he died 4 years ago I had to go thru his affairs for my Mom.
My Mom knows nothing about computers, doesn't even know how to turn one on and would never try let alone go on the internet. So when we got all my Dads' monthly bills together we decided to cancel his AOL account to save money, since it obviously would not be used anymore. I think you can guess what happened.... yes, they tried to talk me out of cancelling the account even though I told them the account owner was dead. They tried to convince me to keep the account open for my mom to use. They just would not take no for an answer. I told them I could Fax them a copy of my Dads' death certificate if that's what it took but I wanted the account canceled. They finally agreed to cancel after about 10 minutes of questioning, and finally said that if we changed our minds that all we had to do was log back in and the account would be open again- I wish it was that easy to bring back my Dad!!

Dude that is just ridiculous...there is no way that they can do that much to keep you paying them. Plus AOL isn't exactly the best isp out there..

I was a beta tester way back in 4.0 days (free acct) to 9.0 se. Then I started to get charged I cancelled them so I thought. They billed me 4 months later for 120.00 i called them with my conformation # that I cancelled the acct I got the money back. Then the next month I got charged 23.90 for service that I never used. Instead of fighting with aol I put a stop payment to aol and all of there service s on my acct. I GOT AOL TO STOP

Ive heard a few horor stories about canceling AOL.
The easiest way to cancel it is never start. Or get a new credit card or bank account that cant be drafted, They will stop the service real quick.
