I always thought the Dave Matthews Band deserved more respect than the "jam band" label that got attached to 'em. Those guys are tops on their instruments and might be the best live band of the past 20 years (Phish notwithstanding). Matthews himself got pegged as a "Kenny G. with a guitar" guy which I always thought was bullshit. Their songs were popular but waaaaay out of the ordinary for the time--lots of counterpoint, key changes, time siggy changes, etc.. They were a jazz band playing pop music. Sadly, their recorded music never quite captured their talent and most people think of sappy love songs when they hear their name.

Even though the rest of the band (rightly) got credit for their virtuosity, Matthews himself never really got the accolades for his guitar playing. He was no Malmsteen but his right hand on the guitar is unreal.

Alternate picking on the verses into descending base notes with a common chord in the chorus. He's a great musician. This is "The Stone" from a Charlie Rose show years ago.

edit----Here's the whole the Charlie Rose interview.

 yeah I know I'm old and boring but I'm listening to the latest Eagles release "A long road out of Eden" still the finest harmony ensemble ever, and Joe Walsh is freakin awesome these days since he dried out bout 10 years ago, very pertinent songs for todays socio-political climate....imho :friends:

BOC is great. They create great moods. Thx mane, hadn't heard that one yet.

enip turned me onto this video from Antoine Dufour--awesome fingerstyle player. Here's his version of Jerry's (Reed) Breakdown with a friend on the bass notes.
