Redmond is planning to rely more on Community Technology Previews for Windows input, and has two new Vista test builds planned for the next two calendar quarters.

Customers and partners who've been holding their breath waiting for Beta 2 of Windows Vista before getting serious about testing Microsoft's next-generation operating system can exhale.

There will be no single, catch-all Beta 2 of Vista, according to Jim Allchin, copresident of Microsoft's Platform Products & Services Division in Redmond, Wa. Instead, Microsoft is planning to rely increasingly on Community Technology Preview (CTP) builds to get its feedback from Windows testers.

I think skipping beta 2 is going to be a big mistake. I am sure because of this Microsoft will have a service pack out for Vista soon after its release

I hope they have SOMETHING, discarding the beta 2 isn't a smart move though!

this doesn't mean anything bad! beta 2 is just a ******* name, as well as release candidates...it does not mean the quality will be any lower, it's just a name..microsoft is just moving away from the naming scheme and sticking with CTP's...it's not a big deal! All it means is that instead of April CTP beign called beta 2, its April CTP, and June will bring a June CTP, and August a August CTP! If you have a problem with the naming scheme just imagine the Feb. CTP like the Dec. CTP, April CTP as Beta 2, June as RC0, August as RC1 <_<
again, this doesn't mean the quality will be any lower, it means nothing at all! people should stop bickering and saying the OS will now suck and a service pack is needed two seconds after Vista is released...
it's not a mistake of skipping B2, because they aren't, they're just using CTP naming. Testers will continue to get these builds, however, I heard that the Feb. CTP is only for TAP, and thus we (TB) may not get the build
and I do believe they will keep Beta 2 in the watermark

According to Jim Allchin, it will be the public Beta 2.
