What are the benefits of the US retaining its control over the internet?

ICANN was setup by the US Department of commerce in 1998, its maintained the internet well and has 7 years of experience. The Department is dedicated to nothing else (of course).

Freedom of Speech is what the US is about, compared to the other countries that want control, risking content that we don't like being forced on the web, and easier to come across.

Blackmail free, the US doesn't use the internet as a threat against other nations, if the power of control was given up it could be used for just that.

What do you think?

I used to support this, but now with the US invading people's rights and privacy I'm not so sure anymore.
