Do you have an external hard drive? I'm always running around to different places so I have a laptop. I only have a 40GB hard drive in my laptop and the alternative of being able to have a 500GB dump that I can use on any computer is a great alternitive for me. I am all for external hard drives being a laptop user. I think that it is even a good way to add on storage space to a desktop computer if it is full of drives and running out of room.

What the heck do you guys think about external hard drives?

I use to be a big laptop user. I had it set up in front of my couch on a small table. It was nice to be able to relax and be online at the same time. So I bought an 80 gig external. Well, the laptop did not have the power I needed, so I bought me a new desktop with a flat panel moniter and huge ass hardrive, so I do not need externals no more. USB2 was quite quick for me, but I didnt like the fact that I had to unplug the drive to turn it off, even if the computer was off. I dont think they have quite the life span as one you have inside the computer.

I envy you clarky, I want a 2.5 inch external. I love how they are powered off the usb on your machine, so very portable and simple.

I have three externals - one that doubles as a CD/DVD-Rom enclosure - two strictly for HDD's only.

Personally - I love the hell out of them. Not sure what the usage for power / ratio is per USB Bus and Internal power consumption - but it seems to me that if the USB is self powered - than yeah - could be slower and draw more power from the source (your PC) but if it's a powered external (which most are) than it would be fair to assume that the USB Bus would only find a tiny bit of hindrance.

Overall - I would'nt have it any other way for the externals. They are a blessing for travel and sharing. In my LAN games - I can take a bundle of maps and transfer then at the simple plug-N-play of a USB device.

I have been looking into the newer flash drives however - and wonder if external drives are going to be a thing of the past before we know it :P

There's my $20.00 worth LOL

Here are two of the three that I own.

You can find them rather cheap here:

The third looks just like this - but it holds a CD/DVD Rom and up to 160GB HDD.
