"The kernel meets The Colonel in a just-published Microsoft patent application for an Advertising Services Architecture, which delivers targeted advertising as 'part of the OS.' Microsoft, who once teamed with law enforcement to protect consumers from unwanted advertising, goes on to boast that the invention can 'take steps to verify ad consumption,' be used to block ads from competitors, and even sneak a peek at 'user document files, user e-mail files, user music files, downloaded podcasts, computer settings, [and] computer status messages' to deliver more tightly targeted ads."

An ad supported free OS would be the logical explanation to counter Linux advances. Still...reading stuff like this make me want to buy 10 more copies of x64 for future use. :graduated:

Hmmm, Interesting. Would you continue to use MS XP 32bit or MS XP 64bit if they continued to offer you free updates and Service Packs past its lifecycle in exchange for ads in your OS? :)

Nope! I was thinking in countries where it's pirated the most, people might use an ad supported version than go to the effort to pirate a copy or learn Linux. :graduated: :)

This sounds great! The more users MS scares away from Windows, the better the alternatives will get. :graduated:

Many people would still prefer a pirate OS than an add supported one :graduated: and i cant blame them :)

heavens no! lol! just in general...seems every other day there is an article somewhere on the interweb warning us plebes about the evil MS :graduated: . or the evil apple (but we really all know how evil jobs and his spasmo henchmen are, so moot point, that :scara: ). i guess i wouldn't have a wild hair if there were also missives claiming mark shuttleworth and torvalds were working for the scientologists, and that ubuntu was actually designed around their concepts... :gsg9:

i'm sure MS patents bunches of stuff all the time, and indeed, while this looks to be the end of our freedoms, i don't think we'll feel the brunt of this any time soon, at least in the fud extrapolations ( :graduated: ). does looks crummy though, but in the context of big business, the norm. in trying to get the one up on competitors, i'm certain many evil-capable inventions will see the patent offices...

You might be right. But you've got to admit, MS has a history of doing things that are less than desirable for the user.

In all honesty, I would have thought Google already held a patent for this. Guess not...

true indeed. too bad MS are such a big outfit that they feel they have to get into the data mining market to remain "competetive". no "live windows" for me
