i firmly believe it was the start menu, without that we would be somewhere else and stuck with the Windows 3.1 idea, which lacks accessibility and usability despite the fact i still miss using it.

The Move to a fully 32bit Kernel back in 96 i think.

ah yes, and when home operating systems started using that and not just their networking OS, that's when things started to get better and better :)
