Let the comments bloat many a tech blog. The Seattle Times is reporting Microsoft’s upcoming portable music player, set to debut in time for the holidays, is called the Argo (yes, like the warship Greek hero Jason sailed).

The Wi-Fi enabled player is apparently being developed in the Xbox division. The gadget will be able to download songs wirelessly, giving it a distinct advantage on Apple’s iPod that requires a computer leash.

Little else is known about the supposed “iPod killer” but tech blog Engadget.com managed to secure a photo of the player from an inside source working on the project. Looking similar to Apple’s iconic player, the Argo features a three-inch display and a scroll wheel.

Also rumoured is the player’s ability to allow developers to easily port games to multiple platforms, perhaps providing a glimpse into the next-generation Xbox Mobile. Or would it be Xbox2Go?

Most likely, details will eke out of the Microsoft annual meeting on July 27. But in true Bill Gates style, expect only a few whispers of what kind of player the Argo will be. After all, mystery makes us want new gadgets even more.
