Just type grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log at the prompt. It should tell you what the error is. I'm guessing the correct modules aren't loading or something.

Sorry, that's the wrong command. Try xorgcfg to set it up automatically. If that doesn't work, run xorgconfig to do it manually. They need to come up with some more self-explanatory names for commands. They're too similar...
Ok finally got around to trying this, I get nothing when running xorgcfg just the same error about no devices, running xorgconfig gets nothing either an trying grep EE ect. does not get me anything just sits there with no prompt or anything anymore.
after reboot I get graphical logon an then 640 res with no way to change it.

Either you didn't run as superuser, but more plausible, X wasn't fully installed. Install the vesa drivers (X11-drivers/vesa iirc)

Can you paste the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf here?

X should work. The installer should be able to at least give you a working X server using vesa (which is a very basic video card driver). Assuming you didn't pay for it, I say dump Mandriva and try something else. I always recommend Ubuntu or one of its variants- Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Mepis, etc.

Sphere says its prolly the motherboard, DFI Lanparty Ultra-D, he says it happens occasionally but he hasnt seen it with this board before,
even with Ubuntu I have had problems, but I was able to get it to work just really long boot times, like 10 mins + Suse 10.2 so far has booted so maybe I will look to that again.

Here's some vi instructions:
To start editing press
[a]
You can now edit and type
To stop editing, press
[esc]
To exit and save press
[:]-[w]-[q]
To exit and discard changes press
[:]-[q]-[!]

note, it's double point, not dotcomma!

to reboot, just enter "reboot" in the konsole.
to try and start X, just type "startx"

And how to install X on mandriva.... I need to check on that!
