Yeah, the dual-core Opty's are pretty damned solid at their clocks. What's kinda depressing is you know you'll get that one core that would probably go to 3.9ghz or something but the other one can't go above 2.6. :chriso:

But, even though I'm a very happy Opteron user, I'd still say save the cash and grab an X2. There's no real performance difference (except in benchmarks) between a dually at 2.6 and one at 2.8 so the headroom on an X2 shouldn't worry you. L2 cache? The extra 512k will come in handy that day when it saves you .0004 of a second in that one app that you never use. I'd say grab the opty if you want a chip that you won't have to worry about at high clocks for a 3-4 years. For 1 year, X2. .02

I thought I read somewhere that there was a 5%-10% difference between CPUs with 512k L2 and 1mb L2. Hmm...maybe I was drunk when I read it :chriso:

Sweet! Do you know what your board can do already as far as turning the multiplier down and upping the fsb as high as possible? Don't forget to do a 24hr cmos clear the day before it arrives too, just to be on the safe side. Crap, I love hearing about a friend getting a new chip to OC. Living vicariously through ya bro, sorry. :chriso: :scara:

Enjoy dual-core goodness!

So, I'm a broke college student/parent that won't be upgrading to another socket for the next year or two. Right now I have a socket 939 Opty 148 (2.2 1mb L2) single core @ 2.8.

I'm thinking of upgrading to a dual core 939 to tide me over until I get the moolah together for a whole mobo/cpu/RAM upgrade. I'm debating getting a x2 4200 Toledo or Manchester (2.2 512k L2) @ 70 bucks or a Opty 175 (2.2 1mb L2) @ 155 bucks. Would there be THAT big of a difference between the two, or even between my single core and one of the two? I game a lot but I also multi-task a bit as well.

Keep in mind that I will be OC'ing and trying to get whatever I get to 2.8 to keep my RAM around DDR500ish (it's DDR512 right now).

If you choose the third option I'd appreciate input as to what alternative you have in mind.

Thanks.

I have one of the Opty 165 dualies and mine is running great at 2.4 so if u want to go with AMD again get an opty.

Either get a 6750 core2 duo or a 2.4 quad core with stepping " G0 SLACR " :chriso:

Why ? coz these both overclock SOO GOOD ! and totally kill AMD's
