If you want a Light environment on a live disc that lacks the nice looks that you can get in Windows BUT has the performance needed to rescue data. Then stop here...yes stop!
BartPE creates a basic enviroment that is easy to navigate, and even includes a level of network support.

Used this a couple of times and I must say that it's really nice 
. Although in case of emergency I'd probably smack in good 'ol SuSE LiveCD 
. If that wouldn't help, then I'd use BartPE once again
