SAN FRANCISCO - Intel Corp. showed off three microprocessors Tuesday based on a next-generation technology that tries to maximize performance and power efficiency while minimizing electricity bills.

The new chips, expected to become available in the second half of 2006, are partly based on the design in the Pentium M ? the processor component of the company's popular Centrino technology for notebook computers. It also will share some features with the Pentium 4 underlying architecture.

"We're combining the best of these two architectures into one," said Paul Otellini, Intel's chief executive.

During a speech at the Intel Developer Forum, Otellini demonstrated notebooks, desktop PCs and servers running the chips, code-named Merom, Conroe and Woodcrest. Like Intel's current Pentium D today, each will have two computing engines, or cores, on a single chip.

Intel and the rest of the industry have been focusing less on raw speed and more on efficiency recently. After years of ratcheting up clock speed of a single core for better performance, newer chips divide the workload between two cores but run at a lower speed.

As a result, performance has continued to improve while power requirements have been held mostly in check.

I saw an article where the CPU is not going to be as important as the chips built on the motherboard. Interesting

Yup, it's weird, the computer industry is changing again!

I like change at times but the one thing I want to really change, better performance for MUCH lower prices :) Some of us don't get paid all that well :D

Yeah, hopefully those low prices will be made much lower those when carbon transistors come into use.

Also question for admins; Would it be possible to give news posters moderation over the news forums (so that if we see a decent piece of member posted news we could update it and move it to portal news)?

This is far from revolutionary, Intel is way behind.

AMD has been doing this for years, AMD has used low clock speeds but high performance and has kicked ass Forever, and the Athlon64 Design was made for DualCore from the beginning, this Article should point out Intel's Depravedness from the start :) but fails to do so.

In Addition! Athlon64 X2 doesn't even need to lower clock speed or performance in Dual Core compared to SingleCore since AMD's Chips run cool and use less power in the first place making Athlon64 The much better chip by design but theres more... AMD have direct line of Communication between the cores unlike Intel which can only communicate by traversing the Front Side Bus eating away Valuable bandwidth.

This article is here so people may read about Intel's accomplishments whether it be a new discovery or not Intel is advancing. It's not here to bag on Intel and hold AMD on a pedistool. I too enjoy AMD processors but that's not the point of this topic.

just to keep my easygoing title intact IL agree with you but not entirely, Intel is Advancing behind AMD's Accomplishments

I agree, they are. But I was just showing that Intels starting to advance a little bit.
