images/news/windows.jpgMicrosoft said on Tuesday that it is ready for broader testing of Windows Vista Service Pack 2, the second collection of fixes for the latest version of the operating system. In addition to bug fixes and performance tweaks, Service Pack 2 adds support for Blu-ray, Bluetooth 2.1, and Windows Search 4.0, the latest version of Microsoft's desktop search technology.

In a blog posting, Microsoft VP Mike Nash said that while Microsoft is offering the customer preview program to all interested parties, not everyone should download SP2 in test form.

"The (test version) is intended for technology enthusiasts, developers, and IT Pros who would like to test Service Pack 2 in their environments and with their applications prior to final release," Nash said. " For most customers, our best advice would be to wait until the final release prior to installing this service pack.

Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) Customer Preview Program (CPP)
December 2, 2008

Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Beta is an update to Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. It provides customer and partner feedback driven fixes into a single service pack, minimizing deployment and testing complexity. In addition to all previously released updates, SP2 will contain changes focused on addressing reliability and performance issues, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards.

dave, in the notes on that page posted above, you are to remove previous sp2 versions...the version listed to remove is the one i have on atm, so i assume the one up for d/l is newer?

Quote

Prerequisites

If you have a prior version of SP2 installed, it must be un-installed prior to installing Beta

* Use the Control Panel applet “Programs and Features” and select “View installed updates” from the top left of the task pane, under Windows, look for KB948465

am i interpreting this statement right?

There has been no new builds issued to testers to date, but that doesn't mean the preview does not include the KB patches from last month which testers had to add themselves after SP2

And yes, With all SP's you do have to remove one before putting on another in testing. Some testers get interm builds

Anyone tried this?
Wondering, because currently, Vista is the worst for laptops, the boot takes so long, it drains the battery even before I can take a normal look at my desktop! (ok, that's over the top, but still pretty much true!)

Microsoft did take some steps to make this Service Pack function a bit better than past upgrades. It is the first Windows Service Pack to work for both the client (Vista) and server (Windows 2008) editions of the operating system in a single update.

SP2 also includes what Microsoft is calling a "Service Pack Clean-up Tool." This will permanently delete old versions of files SP2 is updating, helping you reduce clutter and get rid of outdated system files that'd otherwise just take up space.

Quote

Microsoft released limited betas of the two service packs in late October.
