I know. I'm not currently a team member here. I am a serious folder on the other site's team. On a dual-core machine, be it AMD or Conroe... you can easily bank 1000ppd. :cool2: Others have reported it running well on VMware Server. (free) I installed Ubuntu x64 on my slowest dual-core for a trial. First WU was 693 points for 16 hours work. I plan to run this client on 3 Conroes and I expect my ppd to exceed 4000.

More info here...

Happy folding!!! :scara:

Very interesting. I would never have guessed that it would run in a virtual machine without huge performance loss. I don't have a dual-core anymore unfortunately.

But, in related news, I did just buy a PS3 on eBay (for $100 under retail value. :cool2: ) and I can't wait to start folding on it.

I just read this post by Prof. Vijay Pande at Folding-community.org:

Quote

:scara: I'd be willing to take on bets for when the PS3 client would be released. Please don't confuse the lack of an announced release date for the lack of a client at all -- vaporware implies that the client (which produced the movies on our web site, etc) doesn't exist, which is patently false. I've got one running in my office and I'm happy with it so far. I'm not allowed to say why we haven't released the client yet, but needless to say, it's not for technical reasons.

However, with that said, my advice to any consumer is to be an informed consumer (and I think this is dumas777's point, which is a good oine). Since we can't talk about the PS3 client right now, I can't tell you about its performance, so donors cannot be informed consumers regarding things like PS3 PPD. Once the client goes public, all of this will of course be well known and then it will be interesting to discuss the relative merits of CPU vs GPU vs SMP vs PS3 clients. With so many fairly different architectures supported, there will be lots of relative pros and cons.

I'm sorry I have to be so coy about this! I'm looking forward to talking about this more later.
Is this bad or good? I can't really tell, but he does sound excited.

I think it is safe to say it is good. :cool2: You will be happy with your purchase. I wish I could afford more x1950 Vid cards as I'd love to run a GPU client on each core. I think this would produce more points. The SMP is designed for quad-cores. :fez: The SMP will improve my 24hr average without spending more $$$ though.

I read that. Seems a bit strange, though I'm sure there's a good reason for it.

The cell chip does seem pretty badass. Brew, congrats on getting yours. I have a plan that hasn't worked yet, but I'm confident. My only worry is that it's my plan for every bit of new tech but, as of today it hasn't produced any results:

Step 1: Buy a wrist rocket.

Step 2: Hide in a bush outside of Big Buy Store

Step 3: Watch for the 13 year old with too much allowance.

Step 4: Profit!!! And fold.

:cool2:

Hey WFO whats up bro :(

Hey Vipe, nice to see you here bud! :chriso:

Ahh, it's been a long time since I started this thread. Since going to the SMP on all 5 of my dual-cores, my 24hr average has exceeded 8K on several occasions. It has far surpassed my originall estimate. :o

Ubuntu 7.04 Beta was released 3/23. http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=04126

I'm using updated alpha builds on 2 rigs and really like it. I'm downloading the beta right now.

I'm also uploading a 1760 pointer to your team in about 40 minutes. It represents less than 21 hours work. My E-6600 can do them in VMware in about 19.5 hours. If you guys have dual-cores available, you should really give it a whirl. :o They released a Windows SMP client last week. It too is far superior to the standard client! Compared to the Linux SMP it is dog slow and less stable. I run Linux through VMware on machines needing Windows. :chriso:

LOL... I just wanted to contribute and demonstrate the power of the SMP at the same time. :( You and Chriso are rocking out on the PS3s! :chriso: I've dedicated my N4750 as a folder for this team. Points from it will be far less dramatic. If I can maintain #1 on the other site I'll contribute more here when I can. We have to get you guys in the top 800 so EOC will show individual stats. Fold on my brothers!!!
