What is a simple volume, and what is it good for?

"A simple volume is a single disk drive or segment used for storage in a RAID system; it is not redundant."
-IBM
"A simple volume uses free space from a single disk. It can be a single region on a disk or consist of multiple, concatenated regions. A simple volume can be extended within the same disk or onto additional disks. If a simple volume is extended across multiple disks, it becomes a spanned volume."

looks like you could make a dynamic out of either or both c and d. do you want to do this? i wouldn't, in case of drive problems or the like, or you wanted to use one for something else, and couldn't because it would be one big drive, as data corruption could/would result. i don't see a need for it, as there are big drives these days.
