We all know of networks. They have gone from a business tool to a home tool. Streaming music, video, sharing files and even sometimes hardware.

But does the Router help make sharing all these and more, including the internet easier?

We all want to share something 'outside' of our home at one point, if we are connected to the internet. With ports and firewalls to deal with...are Routers home-user/non-techie friendly?

What do you think?

Routers are Fantastic.

A Self Sustained unit that connects your internet all by itself and all you do is plug in your PCs to the network and bam ! online ! and Networked.

How can you not Love a router ?

See thats the only issue i face, if i get a new router, will i end up having issues...i had problems with getting to Patmans Server, we really wanted to share stuff and it virtually cut me off from the internet.

In the end we gave up!

Yeah, but you have to remember that Patman's router is a piece of junk, by what he said in his router problems topic a while back. LOL!!! :P

Have you guys heard of port forwarding?

If your server on the lan is 192.168.0.55 and the server is on port 80 for example its apache
then you forward port 80 to 192.168.0.55

If your internet ip is 203.111.121.789
then when people type http://203.111.121.789 their browsers automatically go for port 80 :( they Will get the web page served by apache on your server.

this applies to anything, even hosting a game.

I use a router and I serve a http, ftp and host co-op multiplayer games to play with Friends :)

And they are forwarded to your server lan ip?
Are you running all the pc's on dhcp or did you assign a static for each? I believe they need a static IP for the port forwarding to work correctly.

Well in that case :)

Heres a configuration example.
This is how my AG241 is setup, should pretty much look the same on your router.
