the x64 version is great. the nvidia gpu drivers are a notch above the last set (AA and AF improvements),
though my monitor is now set at 59hz (?). i'll try windvd7 this afternoon, though with the last release (vista),
the image quality suffered, and i got a popup stating the application had a compatiblity issue, but would still
run...had to restart to get flash to install...will also try nvidia purevideo (had same results as with windvd7
last time). divx and matroska pack run great, as does media player light, though it took a bit of doing to get
it to be the default player for the matroska encoded stuff.

While i was waiting my download of build 5472x64,i had time to take a few screens of some progs and features in action under 5472x86 version. In general lines this is a good quality beta, im impressed with its performance, stability and compatibility, but still want to test some more things with it.

Startup:
*Is quite fast, better than builds 5384 and 5456.

Desktop:
Posted Image
*Cool new wallpaper

Computer (large icons):
Posted Image

Flip3d:
Posted Image

Updating Vista and TrendMicro:
Posted Image
*TrendMicro is offering a beta program for Internet Security Suite 14 for Vista untill October, 10, 2006.
*Downloading 2.7 MB of security updates from windows update, on first boot.

Advanced Firewall:
Posted Image

System:
Posted Image
*Activated using one of my Beta 2 (5384 x86) keys
*Windows experience performance is just 2.5, my XFX Geforce FX 5500 (256 MB) is pushing it down (the lowest subscore).

Device Manager:
(Conexant Capture - ok)
Posted Image
*Im happy 'cause my PixelView MPEG-2 Pro (Conexant) is installed with the pixelview drives for XP/2k3, but HDTVR 2.5, K!TV 2.4 (beta2) and the remote control dont work correctly.

Windows MediaPlayer 11:
Posted Image
*Looks just great good for me. WMP playback is smooth for any kind of media, including my decrypted / ripped files.

Media Center:
Posted Image
*In my opinion has improved performance when coampared to previous Vista builds.

vrosa, i got a lockup with MCE (x64). if i go through the setup, it seems ok though. i am thinking of setting the MCE processes to manual in admin tools, and see how it goes from there, as trying to end the tree was unsuccessful in task manager.

edit:
---------------------------
Now im going to install x64 version, i will put it in the partition x86 is now running, then will see if MCE behaves this way here. Will be online during x64 install from my other PC. My next step, maybe tomorrow: See how x86 build works on my older PC (system 2 on the sig). I am curious about what will windows experience rating be.

Very nice review! Thank you! could you compare the x86 version to the x64 version here with as to speed and compatability?

Good idea, will check boot times, apps load times and compatibility for x64 and compare with x86.

I had a problem installing x64 one. Setup is freezing after i click the next button on the "insert key" windows. The key is valid, so i think the problem may be with the burnt DVD, maybe some corrupt file.

Burning again now...

Finally i have something to say about 5472x64. In general lines its performance is similar to x86 version, but boots much faster, at least for me.

I wasnt able too install the conexant video capture driver (AMD64 mod, not certifyed), but the assocoated audio device was installed (conexant audio capture).

Software compatibility is quite good, I installed basicaly the same stuff on x86 and x64:

>> Office 2007, Nero Ultra Edition 6.6, TrendMicro Internet Security Suite 14 for Vista B2, InterVideo WinDVD 7, WinAce 2.61, Corel Graphics Suite 11 and other basic apps... All worked fine.

Vista 5472 x86 and x64 performance comparison:

PC-1:
CPU: Athlon64 3000+ @ 1980 MHz
RAM: 2048 MB
GPU: XFX Geforce FX 5500 - 256 MB

PC-2:
CPU: AthlonXP 2400+ @ 2000 MHz
RAM: 1024 MB
GPU: XFX Geforce FX 5200 - 128 MB

PC-3: (to be included 2 more tests)
CPU: Pentium 4 3.0 GHz @ 3000 MHz (stock)
CPU: Pentium 4 3.0 GHz @ 3600 MHz (overcloked)
RAM: 1024 MB
GPU: ATI 9200 Express - 128 MB

Red = Boot Time (logon screen ready)
Green = MCE first load time
Blue = Performance (x86 on PC1 is the baseline)
----------------------------------------------------------

Boot Time (s)
Vista x86 on PC1: 40
Vista x86 on PC2: 62
Vista x64 on PC1: 35

Ready Time* (s)
Vista x86 on PC1: 22
Vista x86 on PC2: 25
Vista x64 on PC1: 29

edit:
* Ready time: Time between logon screen and desktop completely ready.

Total Boot Time (s)
Vista x86 on PC1: 62
Vista x86 on PC2: 88
Vista x64 on PC1: 64

App first load time - CorelPP.exe v11 (s)
Vista x86 on PC1: 13
Vista x86 on PC2: 16
Vista x64 on PC1: 13

App first load time - CorelDRW.exe v 11 (s)
Vista x86 on PC1: 11
Vista x86 on PC2: 12
Vista x64 on PC1: 11

App first load time - MCE (s)
Vista x86 on PC1: 25
Vista x86 on PC2: 32
Vista x64 on PC1: 24

Windows Expirience Number #
Vista x86 on PC1: 2.5
Vista x86 on PC2: 2.0
Vista x64 on PC1: 2.1

*Performance of x86 and x64 on PC1 are very close, x86 general mark was a bit better than x64, but x64 boot time was at least 12 % smaller.

*x86 performance on PC2 is really satisfactory, and for my surprise the Windows Experience # isnt too much lower considering that this one has half the RAM and VRAM that PC1 has.

*I will include x86 on a PC-3 (my job wksta) here when i have time to install ...

edit:
*WinXP (x86) nLite on PC-1 total boot time is 40 seconds !
