HGey guys! First of all, I am getting high speed internet! WHOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!! No more 56k overnight downloads for me!

I bought a wireless router with SPI and NAT firewall, and WPA encryption.

As I am quite new to networking, I welcome any tips to help me get started as I find you guys to be a lot more helpful than random internet guides.

Also, on a side note, can someone explain to me in detail what is 802.1x authentication? How do you get a so called "certificate" that authenticates you w/ the authentication server?

Also, how do I set up a wireless ad hoc network?

All of thiss will be done on WinXP SP2

Thanks you guys!

When you hide the SSID, what does that do? And do you need to know the SSID in order to connect to the network if it is hidden?

if people search for a access point, it wont show yours... you do need to manually create a wireless connection in windows though, but its not too hard to do

Sigh, not too well kw. The installation of the internet got postponed. We have a pretty long driveway, and When the guy came to set it up, he said that their cable isn't long enough to reach our house. They need to re-evaluate with a building team to see if they extend the cable, or if they decide not to take the job. Which means there is a 50/50 percent chance I might still be stuck on 56k. And sateillite costs a fortune. We will find out the verdict monday. I'll keep you guys posted. Thnx.

I don't know. It is amost a given fact that if you get high speed they'll find some way to delay your installation. Gamerpro's got delayed by a month!

you can improve your internet performance by wiring atleast your main PC with cat5 instead of using wireless.

Wireless adds about 20ms to the avg ping delay.

Wait...what's cat5?

If you're talking about a wired ethernet, I need the wireless because I have two laptops that we need to use around the house.

Ah okay...I thought it was something I was missing out on. But whenever my laptops are close by I will wire them instead.

redinferno i didn't say use Ethernet on it all i said your main PC, the PC you use the most , like a desktop one in your room, where you game aswell

use wired for your gaming pc at least, wireless isn't the best with latency.
