My CPU load in Windows XP is constantly at 100%, even after a clean install... why????

It says in my taskmanager "System idle processes 99"

What's the problem?

Check the performance tab in Taskmanager, that will put your mind at rest. My System idle processes 89 right now and yes as much as yours. I believe it refers to HOW idle the PC is.

well, here's the problem, I made a mistake (sorry, it was autopilot typing)
System Idle processes is at 00
while System is at 80-99

And if I check the graph, it's indeed saying 100% load...

I've already tried to kill a few things, like shutdown mcafee, stop the bluetooth, stop diskeeper, spy sweeper, but all didn't help...

mmm now i think it will be something related to Windows, for example after a boot problem that i repaired Media Player was giving me a LOT of grief...if you reboot that might fix it, i note Firefox using over 100mb of ram. It could be that.

Make a point of stopping applications from starting up on their own as you enter Windows unless THEY NEED TO or you want them to. Configure that from each individual application itself, for example Google Talk because if you edit them in msconfig and the APP is told to start on boot in its own config panel then you end up with it still booting and a new boot entry.

You have a LOT of processes running, XP might be under a lot of pressure with all the apps and services together.

Well, a reboot doesn't help, it's this way everytime I enter windows.

Less booting doesn't help, the problem exists even in safe mode!

Unless you have spyware i am stumped then. Though you DO have a lot of processes, let me show you mine.

I am running the first internet explorer 7 beta, Windows Live Messenger, Google talk and Media Player at least.

Oh and i just read up a bit on your problem, it COULD even be a driver problem (don't ask why).

Really not surprising that your CPU is at 100%. Usually, after a clean install of XP, you get 22-23 processes. If the OS is tweaked, then it might drop to 17-18 (which is excellent). After you install some software, it may go up to 35-40. In your case, you have up to 50 as I can see, which is really bad. It slows down your CPU speed and does not help free your memory. I recommend you do the following:

Start- RUN...- msconfig- OK.

At that point, click on the start-up tab. No doubt that you will see a lot of stuff there. Then, click on this link: http://www.processlibrary.com/

Enter each of the items that appear in the start-up tab into the search for a process textbox on the site. You will get information about that process/start-up item and they will state if this is a vital process and if it can be disabled safely, so it won't affect your system. If you can't find it in the library, then just type it in google and you'll get some information about the process.

I'm sure you can disable lot of them. After you finish,click on APPLY in msconfig and restart your PC. You will see the difference, obviously.

There is also the services.msc utility to consider, but try this trick first and tell us if it helped.

Edit: Not normal that Firefox takes up to 101 000 kb of memory usage.

Nope, no spyware, just cleaned it up, all it found were the basic leftovers of "last opened" etc. no interesting stuff like software...
Drivers... Hmm... I just installed with the drivers that came with the pack, and the ATI Omega driver since the ATI Catalyst doesn't install. But that never affected the CPU usage before.

Yes, I know, I'm a Windows n00b... sorry 'bout that!

Ehm, for firefox, I had at that moment somewhat 20 pages and 4 downloads running (some linuxes and information pages).

The services I've already checked and disabled what I could disable


It appeared to be a left-over dll that was activated and doing strange things to connect to it's original software. Removed the DLL and after a reboot, all is fine now
